Humans of St. Olaf: Claire Jussel

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Major: English and History

Class: 2019

Favorite class you’ve taken:

Ben Franklin’s America, followed closely by Creative Writing and 2D art foundations. (I’m cheating and answering multiple classes, and I am an indecisive person and I have genuinely enjoyed a number of classes, so at least I narrowed it down).

Favorite thing to order at the cage:

For food, egg and cheese croissant. For drink, hot chocolate.

Favorite dorm decoration:

A world map with scratch-off foil to mark the places I have traveled. Both my roommate and I have one, so it’s fun to have them hanging up and see where we’ve been.

Some friends and were I full of joy because we survived a year living in shoe box-sized rooms.

Favorite St. Olaf memory:

Oh, it’s so hard to pick, but last winter a couple friends and I rented cross country skis from STORP and skied around the natural lands. It was their first time cross country skiing and we had a great time.

Teaching friends to cross country ski, yay!

Favorite music:

Right now I am listening to Christmas music, because ’tis the season and I love Christmas music to no end. Apart from that, I listen to a lot of different music. I’ve been enjoying Gregory Alan Isokov lately, but I’m also on a Broadway cast-album kick right now, so my music library on “shuffle” is an odd mix.

Favorite book and/or favorite movie:

For a book series, Harry Potter. For a stand-alone book, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. For a movie, The Princess Bride or It’s a Wonderful Life (yay Christmas!).

Favorite sound:

Falling rain/storms.

If you were given a $20 Target gift card, what would you buy?

Probably stationary and new pens/pencils that I don’t really need, but always fawn over at the store, and Annie’s White Cheddar Bunnies, because they are addicting and delicious.

Reconnecting with the homeland at Target (I’m from Boise and, for the record, I do not live on a potato farm).

Have you ever studied abroad? Where would you like to go?

Not yet, but I am spending this interim in Italy studying art, and I am very excited for that! I am also considering applying for a semester program for next year, most likely somewhere in the British Isles.

Is there anything new you want to try while still on the hill?

I have yet to go sledding down Old Main Hill on a caf tray.

Ice skating in the cities.

What is a community on campus that you feel proud to be apart of and why?

I am part of St. Paul’s Outreach, which is a Catholic student organization on campus. It’s been a great way to connect with other Oles through faith and friendship (that was a bit cheesy, but it’s true).

How have your future plans changed during your time on the hill?

I started college thinking I was going to study neuroscience and possibly English. Since then, I have realized that while neuroscience and psychology are interesting, I’ve always been more inclined towards the humanities. After a lot of unnecessary fretting, I decided that History and English would be a better major pairing for me. :)

Gotta love fall on campus! (photo cred to Kyla Pohl)
