Fram Fram to Fitness: Making healthy Lenten decisions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hello HC Fitness Readers!

I just got back from the beach with my flat mates! It is a lovely day in Dunedin, New Zealand and I have begun to explore more of the city each day. As I mentioned in my last blog, for this past week I wanted to explore the new territory that I will be living in for the next few months during my study-abroad experience.

[On my university’s campus.]

So far, I’ve happily done that, while getting a great deal of exercise. I have run around the botanical gardens of Dunedin – which I must add are very beautiful – and I have run along the harbor. I also have gone to the new gym on campus; it’s great and very close to my flat (apartment) which is a huge plus.

As for food, I have tried a great deal of different foods, many thanks to my flat-mate Hannah’s vegan taste. I have tried rice seaweed crackers, which I actually really like!  I’ve also tried a vegetable known as Kumara; it tastes similar to sweet potato. I am also making healthier choices at the grocery store.

[Around campus!]

The beginning of Lent is just around the corner, and I have figured out what I need to give up: soda. This is definitely a crutch in my diet right now I must admit, I have been drinking a great deal of diet soda (I am a Pepsi Max girl, all the way), but I realize this is not good for my diet and it needs to be nixed. If you celebrate Lent, I encourage you to give up something you know should be out of your diet – cookies, late night Cage pizzas, vending machine candy, and more. Giving up the treat for one month may show you that you don’t need to have it as often as you do now!

For me, thinking about giving up soda, I can already list many other options though that I know will be great suppplements (and actually healthy). First of all, Hannah, who I mentioned earlier, brought a juicer to school, so we just put fresh fruit and veggies and wahh laa- delicious juice. Also, drinking more water is the way to go, especially after putting it in the fridge being chilled after a long run. Yummy!

So for this week I plan on continuing to explore, figure out some healthy Lenten resolutions, and embrace the different foods and exercise routines. My hope for this week also includes finding out different workouts from friends I have made and sharing them with you.

So until next time, keep running, keep on the healthy eating, and embrace the new.
