Ask Miss Manitou: Five ideas for weekend fun

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Question: Any ideas for fun things me and my friends can do on weekends? Besides Pause dances, watching movies etc. Bored with the same old same old

Answer: Dear Bored with the same old same old,

I know EXACTLY what you mean. St. Olaf can feel like a pretty small campus and it seems especially bleak when you don’t have a car to drive up to the cities for Girls Nights Out (and talk about expensive — have you seen gas prices lately?). Weekends are a time for Oles to take a break from all that reading and do something fun and spontaneous! But what happens when your creative juices aren’t, well, creative?

The following is a list of some fun things that I have enjoyed in the past. Some might require a little extra work, but they are bound to break up at least a few of your dull weekend routines:

1. One word: Twister. You know, that game where you try to touch the colored dots and get into funky positions? When was the last time that you played Twister? Do you remember how much fun it was? Well it’s just as much fun now. If you want to make the game more interesting, try finding “punishments” for falling such as making them spell their name with their butt or making them sing terribly (on purpose – I know most Oles are marvelous singers) and video taping it. If they fall again, threaten to put it on Facebook. Or better yet, send me the link (via comment) on hercampus. It would make my day!

2. This might be post-Valentine’s Day fever, but making cards for people that you find special can be a fun arts and crafts night. Get colored pencils, colored paper, scissors, glue, and funny or meaningful quotes (there are plenty online) and make some cards for friends. You and I both know how great it is to see things inside our P.O. boxes, so why return the favor? If you’re not all about cards, try making posters for your room by posting pictures of friends or cute animals (or hot boys) on the posters with a couple of cute sayings. Become the artist!

3. Plan a ski/snowboard day! This might have been more useful when it was cooler and more snowy, but if I know Minnesota, there should be another month of winter surprises. Most hills offer rental skis and snowboards, so you don’t have the excuse of not having the proper equipment. Bug a friend who has a car to go with you and it could turn into a memorable day of falls (it’s okay girls, I don’t know how to stop so no one could look as pathetic as me). Take plenty of pictures!

4. Learn how to play a musical instrument! St. Olaf is filled with extremely talented musicians and singers. If you feel left out of the loop, try learning from them! You don’t have to be super intensive; just one lesson makes you feel that much more awesome (Mary Had a Little Lamb never sounded so good when other people played it). Get out of your comfort zone!

5. Why not make up your own contest? This is a fun activity because you can make it personal. If you like baking, make a cooking contest! If you like eating, make an eating contest! (Don’t forget to invite the boys!) If you like physical activities, invent a running/jumping/breath-holding/balancing/shooting (basketball)/tennis/whateveryoufreakingwant contest! Don’t forget to invite lots of people! It makes the event that much more fun.

I hope these ideas keep you entertained for a few more weekends. Don’t forget to capture these moments —  I would love to see how they turn out!
