Quarantined Halloween: The Year Without Halloweekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. John's chapter.

I wrote an intro to this article before Wednesday night until I went back and deleted it all. We’re living in a time of uncertainty and I’ve fallen victim to it. The Halloween plans I once had had to be unexpectedly and sadly canceled and rescheduled. So I’m stuck in mandatory isolation because I was exposed to someone who potentially displayed symptoms of COVID-19. I’m not scared, but I am frustrated; Halloween in college! I’ve been waiting for this! But it’s nothing like I could have ever imagined. My roommate and I have had to settle our emotions before we could reevaluate the big day.

Like most college students, we tend to cram everything we have to do until the last minute or we just end up not doing it at all. We were supposed to do this 31 days of Halloween where we watch a spooky or horror related film every night, but we didn’t end up being consistent. At all. I mean, I can count the movies we watched on one hand. One. Haunting of Hill House (not a film or even on the original list we made). Two. Paranorman. Three. Hereditary (and we only finished half). But it’s fine! We made up for our inconsistency with a pumpkin patch visit on Long Island last weekend. Sure it didn’t have a corn maze (*insert sad face here*)  but we got pumpkins! One 15 pound pumpkin and two smaller ones. We painted the mini pumpkins Among Us themed but didn’t carve our big pumpkin because of the lack of tools. One. We couldn’t find any. Two. We’re stuck inside and can’t even try to look for some anymore. Times aren’t the best for us right now but at least we’re together. It’s scary in this suite. Bare walls and creaking pipes sound all too similar to an old asylum. Naturally, we watched American Horror Story: Asylum while still continuing to struggle to finish any kind of entertainment.

In a global pandemic, we’re out Halloween parties, haunted houses, and trick or treating. In mandatory self-isolation, we’re out pumpkin carving. All we’re left with is to lay in our DJ and Chowder (from Monster House, the first movie on our 31 days of Halloween list) costumes and find the strength to finish one movie in one sitting. I hope your Halloween isn’t as dreadful.
