5 Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. John's chapter.

Every time Valentine’s Day comes around, there are always those who speak out against the novelty of the holiday by saying, “you should show your significant other how much you love them every day of the year!” While this is sound advice for sure, there’s nothing wrong with celebrating the holiday for what it’s worth, especially if you’re single.

How can a single person actually enjoy Valentine’s Day and not have the urge the pop every red and pink balloon in sight? Here’s a few tips that show how V-Day is not just about romantic love, but love for family, friends and most importantly, yourself!

1. Plan a friend date and dress accordingly.

There’s no better mood-lifter than putting on your favorite outfit and getting ready with your best friends. Now’s the time to put all those Youtube makeup tutorials to good use and try out that new look you’ve been perfecting for months (with some much-needed help from a friend). Maybe if you ask nicely enough, your BFF will let you use her Anastasia Glow Kit for extra glamour (maybe). Then go show off by planning a “galentine’s day” date with your friends. From having dinner at your favorite restaurant to seeing a movie, a night out with friends is guaranteed to be a good time.

2. Give (or send) your family members something to show you’re thinking of them.

Even if it’s just a card or their favorite candy, a simple gesture can go a long way. If you’re away at school, there’s all the more reason to send your loved ones a little pick-me-up when they least expect it. Maybe they’ll even send you one in return!  It sounds corny, but who says your mom can’t be your valentine? Moms always give the best gifts, anyway!

3. Treat yourself to a “me day.”

While spending time with loved ones is great, sometimes we need to just relax and treat ourselves. Whether it’s buying yourself a Sprinkles cupcake or a bath bomb (both are pretty inexpensive if you don’t want to splurge too much), a little treat can make you feel a whole lot better. Bonus: Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday this year, so it’s the perfect time to rest and relax!

4. Give back to those who are in need.

Since Valentine’s Day is about spreading the love, why not give back to those who may not get to share the day with loved ones? Websites such as nycservice.org can help you find a variety of opportunities to volunteer in New York City.

5. Bake!

Is there ever a bad time for baked goods? There are so many great recipes on the Internet if you’re feeling adventurous, but even the classic Toll House take-and-bake cookies work! This is a fun activity to do with friends, family, a significant other and even by yourself!

Disclaimer: This article isn’t just for single girls, it’s for anyone (including those in relationships!) who wants to try something new and fun.
