2022 World Cup in Qatar –  A Tournament the World Will Surely Remember

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. John's chapter.

Seeing as the 2022 World Cup is approaching in just a few weeks, these are the teams that you should keep an eye on as they may just rise to the top before you even know it. Keep your eyes peeled for these teams and see how far they can go in this year’s World Cup.

France

France is first up on the list. Being the previous World Cup champions from 2018, they are one of the favorites this year. However, anyone rooting for France should be wary as they may be struck by the “World Cup curse”. It’s said that once a team wins the cup in a previous season, they may face early termination from the finals. This just makes it even more exciting to see how the tournament plays out for them.

Netherlands

Next up on our list would be the Netherlands. This would be an obvious choice as they are already in good form for this season. The Netherlands has remained undefeated in their league group against Belgium, Poland and Wales.

Portugal

Following the Netherlands team, Portugal would be the next to keep in mind. Portugal is one of the most anticipated teams with upcoming stars like Nuno Mendes, a left-back player with a rating of 80. Mendes has an 88 projected rate, he also plays for the PSG league, made up of some of the best players in the World. Another star player is Ruben Neves, a midfielder for Portgual and captain of the Wolverhampton Wanderers. Neves has two EFL awards to his name, “Team of the Season” and “Goal of the Year.” (name a few). Additionally, Portugal has Cristiano Ronaldo who is expected to help carry this team to the World Cup final, considering that this is ultimately his last World Cup.

Argentina

Portugal may be one of the most anticipated teams, but another “no-brainer” team to watch out for would be Argentina. As the only undefeated national team at this moment, they are just two games away from tying Italy’s record. Alongside being the winner of the 2021 Copa America tournament, this team is one of the top favorites. The biggest attention grab from Argentina is Lionel Messi who is in great form this season. We might see something spectacular from him since this will also be his final World Cup. His long-awaited performance is leaving fans on the edge of their seats, waiting to see if he can pull through to the final rounds as he once did in 2014.

This season’s World Cup has a lot of top competitors to be keeping an eye out for. The final round can be expected to catch a lot of attention internationally. The Cup, which is being hosted in Qatar, is projected to bring in 5 billion viewers, a significant increase from the already high volume of 3.6 billion that the 2018 tournament brought in. This year’s World Cup will surely be one to remember.
