What’s the Deal With High-Waisted Shorts?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Edward's chapter.

A fashion trend that has been taking over the lives of teenage girls and young women today is the high-waisted shorts. This retro look has been in the fashion scene since the flashy 1980s, and its comeback has been rocking our world.

But lately, guys have been saying that high-waisted shorts don’t flatter girls’ figures as they see them as “mom jeans,” but what do they know? Yeah, girls tend to have to look for the best high-waisted shorts in the mom’s section of thrift stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army, but that doesn’t mean high-waisted shorts are any less fashionable or flattering.

Sophomore Jessica Guajardo, an avid high-waisted shorts wearer, says, “They’re really flattering and I love how versatile they are, because I think they’re a piece for almost any occasion.”

These shorts can literally compliment any look and they can do so much good for a girl’s butt and waist line. Since these shorts can help a girl’s figure, why not wear them? Guys have a lot of opinions in this world, and I don’t think our fashion trends need to be hindered by what a bunch of dudes say. Sophomore Paula Santos says, “The main thing about these shorts is that it boosts up a girl’s confidence,” and there is nothing wrong with having a little confidence in how you look regardless of what others think.

This trend isn’t just impacting the wearers today, but it also is impacting other girls that don’t even own a pair. Non-wearers and wearers alike have the same perspective, as it is an easy and trendy look that can complete any outfit. Sophomore Natalie Sizemore, who personally does not own a pair of high-waisted shorts, says, “I love the trend and I think it’s an easy way to look fashionable-they create such a classic and retro look with almost no effort.”

Sometimes, high-waisted shorts are the only kind of shorts that a girl is comfortable is in. And that is perfectly okay because nothing matters more than if a girl feels good in what she’s wearing. Sophomore Sharnicia Dotson makes this great point by saying, “High-waisted shorts are really flattering, especially for girls who are usually uncomfortabein shorts. I think it allows someone to just feel great about themselves, and that’s what fashion is all about.”

These shorts could technically be considered as “recycled fashion” as it is an old trend taking on a new generation, but isn’t that what our world today is about? Our society emphasizes so much on not wasting what we already have and being extremely resourceful and minimal, so it isn’t surprising that these societal values are impacting our fashion world. Girls are making the best of what we have in our closets and in thrift stores where perfectly good and wearable clothes sit, and we look damn good doing it.
