Can College Boyfriends Be Our Stylists?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Edward's chapter.

After Kim Kardashian gave birth to North West over the summer, she and her fiancé Kanye West made their debut back on the fashion scene during Paris Fashion Week. Since their fashion debut, the dynamic duo has been spotted everywhere, dressed to impress. It’s no secret that Kanye buys clothes for Kim and styles her.

Kimye’s fashion pairing has created a buzz about how boyfriends are the new stylists. Jessica Biel even admitted in the August 2012 issue of InStyle that  hubby JT picks out her outfits. But can college- aged boyfriends be stylists?

Before answering that question, think about it, how amazing would it be to have your boyfriend as your shopping buddy? For him to actually understand the difference between Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors. For him to give a good opinion about how you look in your outfit.

But instead, most guys don’t want to deal with going into any clothing store, don’t understand who all these designers are, and like to choose outfits that leave little to the imagination. With that being said, unfortunately, your boyfriend is not going to be your stylist.

There might be a small percentage of guys walking around campus who pick out their girlfriend’s outfits or wish they had a girlfriend whose outfits they could choose but overall, this is not the case.

I like to think that guys fall into one, if not more of the following categories as to why they can’t be stylists.

The Broke College Student

This guy has too many other things to prioritize and fashion is just at the bottom of the list. He won’t be able to understand why anyone would want to spend $100 or more on a pair of jeans. He barely has enough money to pay for his $2.00 grilled cheese at Hunt.

The Careless Guy Who Doesn’t Understand Girls

Most guys probably fall into this category. They prioritize comfort over aesthetics and beyond that they don’t care about what they wear themselves, so they really won’t care about what their girlfriends wear. They don’t understand why girls would undergo a few hours of suffering and next day feet throbbing because that pair of shoes just made the outfit so much cuter.

The Guy Who Just Doesn’t Care About Fashion

Another type of guy that falls into the careless category is the guy that simply does not care about fashion. This guy doesn’t think it’s important, he thinks clothes are just clothes.

The Guy Who Can’t Be Honest

A guy cannot be completely honest when asked, “How does this look?”  He doesn’t want to get into argument, and knows that’s a risk if he doesn’t say what he was supposed to. He will most likely tell you what you want to hear. And don’t even think about asking him if you look fat in something; because he probably has been asked that enough to already know what he’s supposed to say.

So, you may not be as lucky as Kim Kardashian or Jessica Biel whose men choose their clothes. However, would you really wear what your boyfriend picked out for you? Or do you like being the stylist for your boyfriend, as it is in most cases? Tell me in the comments below!
