The Royal Wedding: Sick of it!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

Alright, alright already. I am fed up. How about you? Will and Kate seem to have taken over the world. A girl’s wedding is supposed to be the most special day of her life. But does it really need to be the biggest day in the lives of her fellow Brits, as well as the innumerable anglophiles peppered across the globe? Don’t get me wrong- I send my heartfelt congratulations, but I have had it up to here with the royal wedding coverage that has flooded every newspaper, television station, and radio show since the engagement was announced.

I suppose it doesn’t really help that I am in the very place where the two star-crossed lovers first met. Only a few Don’t Walk runways ago, His Royal Highness spotted something not available in the spring lines. Watching Kate strut down the stage, Prince William was bowled over by her beauty and knew he had to have her. The story is an inspiration to every girl at St Andrews hoping to get her M.R.S. degree. If we do our hair just right and slip into a couture gown, we might end up with our faces on cupcakes.

Every time I step outside of my dorm and venture into town, I am accosted by their now all-too-familiar faces beaming down at me on everything from decorative bunting to balloons to giant posters. Instead of the usual Cath Kidston or Emma Bridgewater mug, friends tote their mugs emblazoned with photos of the bride and groom-to-be to meals. The bed of flowers that once proudly announced ‘600 Years’ is now sporting a new look; ‘W Y K’ has replaced it.

Lectures are canceled, though I’m not complaining about that, and dining hours have been shifted in the halls of residence to accommodate prime viewing on television. Everyone I know has plans to watch the nuptials. Brunches, high tea, and trips to the pub seem to be the most popular, but I even heard word of a hen party being thrown in honor of Kate. Both Fischer & Donaldson and Bibi’s have taken advantage of all of the hype, selling cakes and cookies fit for the event. Amazingly enough, the hubbub has spread across the pond. My friends at home are more excited than I am, envious of my proximity to the grand occasion.

A recipe for pea and mint soup came up on my Stumbleupon, touting its connection to the royal family. According to the food blog it was posted on, pea and mint soup is Will’s favorite. How on earth do we know that? And more importantly, why do we care? I would say that I’m glad it will all be over soon, but I’m pretty sure we’ll be hearing about this for months and even years (thanks to TV. shows like ‘I Love the 90s’) to come.

Hayley Daen is a sophomore at the University of St Andrews, where she studies the most useless of subjects, Art History. She lives in a dinky apartment right across from Tesco, which makes throwing impromptu tea parties a snap. She loves blue-and-white striped shirts and has an (almost certainly unhealthy) obsession with Christmas.
