Freya’s DIY Tea Cup Candles

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

Candles in a tea cup

Ever had loads of candle snubs and cracked tea cups lying around? I thought so. This is the project for you. If not, hit your local charity shop, and spy out for yourself some vintage tea cups and, tenancy agreement permitting, create these quaint little candles.

Things you will need:

Tea cups (try charity shops)

Beeswax (or the ends of random candles)

Oven

Saucepans that will fit into each other

Skewer

Bluetac

Newspaper

Wick/string

Optional:

Food colouring

Essential oils e.g. Lavender

First choose some mugs from around the house, preferably not your great grandmothers priceless Wedgewood ceramics. My mother provided me only those which were cracked.

Secondly measure out the wax (roughly about double the amount of beeswax that fits in the teacup) and melt in the double saucepan with the bottom layer filled with boiling water.

Next add any food colouring or essential oils that you might like. I went for lavender and blue candles. Meanwhile  prepare the cups as depicted in the picture below; place the wick in the centre (it might be easier to stick down with blue tac) and lean again a cocktail sick to ensure that the wick is central.

Finally pour in the wax into the teacup and leave to cool and solidify overnight.
