The Cast of “Hamilton” Was Prepared for Mike Pence

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

This past Friday, Mike Pence went to see “Hamilton” on Broadway, which is something I never thought would happen. For someone who is so notoriously biased against a plethora of groups, it seems like such an uncharacteristic move to go to a hip-hop musical with one of the most diverse casts in recent history. But nevertheless, he did go and witness the perfecion that is “Hamilton” in person (another reason to dislike the guy) and the crowd did not approve.

Pence reportedly was booed by portions of the audience when he arrived, body guards in tow – I can’t imagine it was comfortable for anyone sitting near him last night.

But the shining moment of the night was after the show had ended, when the cast came out and gave a beautiful, stirring message, directly to the future Vice President, who had been in the process of leaving the theatre.

“We sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us,” began Brandon Victor Dixon, the show’s new Aaron Burr.

Dixon continued to urge Pence to listen to the diverse voices and to “work on behalf of all of us.”

According to The New York Times, the statement was crafted by several people, including the cast and Lin-Manuel Miranda himself.

Here’s hoping that Pence not only heard the message but will take it to heart.
