Extreme Dieting Exposed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Southern Miss chapter.

One of the things we worry about when starting the first year of college is gaining the dreaded “freshman 15.” So, we exercise, watch our daily calorie intake and eventually find a diet that we can manage. However, what most of us don’t realize are the facts about what these diets are doing to our bodies. They can actually do more harming than helping us get the body we desire to keep or have.

A number of celebrities are known for following detox diets to lose weight. According to an article from msnbc.com, Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie used a detox diet to help them shed pounds for movie roles. However, detox diets can sometimes keep you from being healthy instead of giving you the essential things you need to for a great body. According to a msnbc article, when on a detox diet, instead of flushing out the bad stuff from your body, you are actually flushing out the good bacteria you need to keep your body healthy.

Other forms of dieting include the infamous diet pill. Many collegiettes take these pills thinking they will be a quick remedy for jumpstarting weight loss. However, according to livestrong.com, diet pills are only a temporary fix, meaning there are only a certain amount of days you can take the pill, and after those days are up, you are expected to lose the weight on your own. Also, you have to be careful about the foods or liquids you ingest into your body, especially caffeine. Since diet pills already have side effects, mixing caffeine with these types of stimulants can cause you to lose sleep, and worse than that, it could cause death. If you take any over-the-counter medicines, it wouldn’t be a good idea to take diet pills on top of those prescriptions since diet pills contain several ingredients which most of the time don’t mix well.

Another common form of dieting is fasting. Fasting has harmful effects, which include interfering with the immune system and vital bodily functions. It can also cause severe damage to the liver, kidneys and other organs. If the fasting gets too severe, it can result in death because the body’s supply of stored energy and fuel has run out.

Let’s face it; the best way for us to pursue the body of our dreams is to do it the healthy way. Just exercise, eat healthier foods and EXERCISE. We can’t depend on detox diets, diet pills, fasting or any other form of dieting. It’s better to be healthy and get the body that you desire to keep or have than be unhealthy or possibly cause severe harm to your body. Use your smarts to give your weight loss a jumpstart!
