What I Wished I Knew Before Making My College Decision

It’s college decision season! About a year ago, I was in the exact same position as many current high school seniors – questioning where I belonged and scared of what the future held. Though I had already made my decision to attend the University of South Carolina months prior to the May 1st deadline, I understand the fear of not wanting to make the “wrong” decision. Here is a short list of all the things you should consider in order to make your decision easier.

  1. Is it ACTUALLY affordable?

Most people only really think about the cost of college for the first year when deciding on their college. It’s easy to get lost on the scholarships and grants you’re receiving, but sometimes the scholarship is only for the first year. Those scholarships and funds aren’t guaranteed in the three years after. According to FOX Business, about two in five (42%) college dropouts cite financial reasons for leaving school from a UPCEA study. Applying for scholarships doesn’t stop while you’re in college and is taking out thousands of dollars from loans really worth the massive debt you will be stuck paying off for years?

  1. Location MATTERS

For me, I wanted some distance, but not too much where I can’t go home whenever I need to. UofSC was perfect being only 1 hour and 45 minutes away from home. However, it is not only the distance, but you must also consider the weather and accessibility to things you need. If you’re a person used to the hot weather with constant sunshine, a college where it rains 24/7 and gets at least 5 inches of snow each year won’t be the best fit for you. It is also good to consider the proximity to locations you visit often like the pharmacy, bank, or favorite grocery store.

  1. Opportunities?

When I say opportunities, I don’t mean just professionally. I’m also speaking academically and socially. If you’re trying to get the most out of your college experience, you want the college to actually provide those chances for you to take advantage of. For example, at UofSC, they host Thursday after Dark events every week in order to allow students to go out and have fun together. There are also community-building opportunities through cohorts, clubs, and Greek life. For academics, there are SI sessions, one-on-one tutoring, and office hours. The Darla Moore School of Business, frequently hosts business expos and panels to help students network and learn more about their field of interest.

The transition from high school to college can be extremely difficult, and it can feel like every decision you make will forever alter your life. These emotions are normal and expected, but you have every right to change your mind or to make mistakes. Maybe even after months of listing the pros and cons of every single school you applied to, you still end up miserable. Or when the time finally comes, you begin to doubt the dream school or major you have always envisioned for yourself. In other words, there is no such thing as the “right” decision so don’t pressure yourself too hard and believe what’s meant for you will always find its way.
