Schuyler Petti on How to Find Your Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.
As I walked into Schuyler Petti’s apartment, passing the Kappa key doormat, I couldn’t help but laugh to myself. The exaggerated srat-star display could not be a worse representation of the laid-back, cool persona she’s all about. A self-proclaimed “sneaker head,” Schuyler describes herself as a “preppy-hipster.” In her own words, she’s just not a fancy person. So, when I thought about great style, style that truly embodies a person’s personality, I thought, “Schuyler- this girl has it.”

Growing up in New York, Schuyler had the unique opportunity of switching her time between the East Village in Manhattan and a small suburb 30 minutes away. This split gave Schuyler a chance to explore both “NYC street style” as well as the typical, suburbs staples; riding boots, cardigans and crop tops. Blushing, Schuyler began to admit, with a tinge of regret, that she too wore the basic-girl uniform. I mean, didn’t we all! But when Schuyler came to college, she changed her view on style all together.

When she thinks back to her style icons, she recalls what her mom has always told her, “The only two things you need to spend money on are great jeans and even better boots.”

And that ladies and gents is what we’ve brought to you today! Whether you’re trying to re-vamp your wardrobe or just want some easy styling tricks, Schuyler’s got you!

1. Always polish off your look. When Schuyler thinks her outfit is missing something, she’ll add a pair of fire booties or mix it up with a layered necklace. Right now, her favorite necklace is a gold, word necklace that reads, “sinmiedo” which means fearless in Spanish.

2. Dress for your body. Schuyler has a bangin’ booty and a tiny waist, so she feels best in high-waisted jeans and leather jackets. At its core, your style should make you feel great, no matter what your shape! “I’m obsessed with becoming a woman comfortable in her own skin.” AMEN TO THAT!

3. Don’t always follow the fads. If something doesn’t work for you, don’t make it! Just because crop tops are trendy or everyone is wearing piko shirts downtown doesn’t mean you have to too! Find some staple wardrobe pieces and focus on rocking them. For example, Schuyler is always looking for blacks, navies, whites, and dark reds when she is shopping for new clothes. She can never pass up a knit sweater either!

4. Don’t dress to be sexy for others. If you feel uncomfortable in clothes, it is going to show! Body-cons and stilettos aren’t for everyone- LOL unless you’re a Kardashian, then that ish is required! Seriously though, if you love turtlenecks and they look good on you then rock that! Your confidence is much more appealing than a crop top that doesn’t play up your best attributes.

5. Keep doing you. Style isn’t a one-shape fits all and it’s not an end game. Chances are your style will always be involving. Schuyler trusts her instincts but she also follows fashionistas and bloggers on Instagram for inspiration. If you want to follow Schuyler on Tumblr, her handle is: la-sirene.tumblr.com. Wink, wink. I got you Schuyler!
