Learning to Love Valentine’s Day, Even When Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

Valentine’s Day is one holiday that can definitely trigger a lot of emotions in people, either positive or negative. The holiday itself can sometimes give the impression of broadcasting the idea of relationships and love out onto society — making those who are single feel a certain type of way about the upcoming date. But I’m going to tell you all the ways you can still love Valentine’s Day no matter your relationship status.

5 Ways to Enjoy V-Day

1. Stay in with friends or yourself and have a day of pampering. Go all out with facemasks and binge watch movies or television with some sweet treats.

2. Buy yourself flowers — only you know what flowers you love the most!

3. Invite some single friends to lunch or dinner for your own little gal-entines day. Friends need love, too!

4. Plan a little weekend away. Avoid the holiday mess by getting out of town for a day or two.

5. Go out to a bar or restaurant — you can still enjoy going out with friends. Better yet, you won’t have to deal with the stress of dinner and gifts for your partner!

Of course, these are just a few ideas — but who says Valentine’s Day can only be fun for people in relationships? Personally, I’m single and love the holiday. All the different desserts and pink decorations are such a sweet and uplifting reminder that love is out there — everyone just has their own journey to it. Plus, we cannot forget how fun Valentine’s Day was when we were kids, getting to decorate our own boxes only for the next day at school to be filled with all kinds of candy and fun notes. Sure, this holiday can be rough for a lot of people, and rightfully so, but I think anyone can enjoy it. Why should people in relationships be the only ones who get to celebrate with hearts in an array of pinks and reds? Anyone can enjoy these things, so let’s start embracing the fun this holiday has to offer instead of running from its impending arrival.
