Healthy Dorm Breakfasts to Try This Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

Although it may be tempting to head over to the dining hall to pick up some Chick-fil-A breakfast before class, let’s be honest, a person can only eat chick-n-minis so many times before getting tired of it. If you are as sick of dining hall breakfast as I am, I’m offering the perfect alternative: making your own breakfast in your dorm! It is totally possible to have an amazing, nutritious, and time efficient breakfast all at once made ala-dorm room. Here are some suggestions!

Oatmeal

This may be an all time favorite of mine because it will take five minutes max to make and never fails to taste amazing. What’s great about oatmeal is that it can be made as simple as you want it to- although I tend to go crazy on my toppings. I suggest always keeping a large box of quick oats in your dorm room along with some frozen fruit that you can defrost to use as a topping (frozen fruit stays fresh longer). Bonus points if you add nut butter, granola, cinnamon, or protein powder!

Overnight oats

This is the ultimate, “I have absolutely no time to make anything for breakfast” breakfast. As implied by the title, it is made the night before and left overnight to be eaten in the morning. To make a serving you can combine ½ cup of oats with 1 tbsp of chia seeds and ½ cup of almond milk (or whatever milk you desire) in a jar. Leave it overnight in the fridge and top with your favorite toppings in the morning. My personal favorite way to customize my oats is by adding a scoop of protein powder, some berries, and some almond butter. Overnight oats are totally customizable, so you can make it with anything you want!

Yogurt bowls

Yogurt bowls are another quick, simple, and totally customizable breakfast that is easy to keep in your dorm room. My go-to yogurt bowl includes coconut yogurt with some granola, fruit and nut butter on top! However, if you aren’t big on coconut yogurt you can use any yogurt of your choice including greek, flavored, or even almond milk based yogurt!

English muffins

When I say English muffins are the best ever, I mean it! You can put ANYTHING on them! An easy dorm go-to would be some nut butter and fruit, however the options are endless. You can make egg sandwiches, avocado toast, or even french “english muffin” toast if the ingredients are available to you!

Easy microwave eggs

Did you know you can microwave eggs in a mug? Neither did I, until recently. Although I have yet to try this hack, Pinterest has a lot of evidence that suggests that it works- just make sure you microwave your eggs until they are fully cooked!!! If I were to make this I would add whatever toppings I had in my fridge, which would likely include salsa, some seasoning, and maybe even some veggies from a leftover dining hall salad to give it more substance. Serve with a side of microwaved bacon and you have an easy and simple diner style breakfast!

You don’t have to be a chef to make a good tasting and nutritious breakfast. With enough creativity, a simple dorm room microfridge can double as an industrial kitchen. Consider giving the dining hall a break to try out these healthy and efficient meals- trust me, your meal swipes will thank you!
