Fighting For Us With Chelsea Clinton

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

Chelsea Clinton, a mother of one (and soon to be two) addressed the reasons why she supports her mother, Hillary Clinton, and why this election has been more important than ever in an afternoon forum hosted by the USC College Democrats on Friday, February 26th.

Chelsea Clinton is used to the political spotlight. In her own life, she has made strides working on the board of The Clinton Foundation and before that she grew up as the daughter of a president. She has been under the public eye in political rallies and watched as her mother arose in her political career. The reason why it is different this time around? This time, she’s a mother.

As a mom, everything seems more important than her own personal needs, which is why she feels that her own mom would be the best president for her children.

The three topics she spoke about in detail were healthcare, the Supreme Court, and keeping our country’s values in tact. She referenced to her mother’s efforts to ensure healthcare coverage and pointed out that she believes the next president should know when and how to stand their ground on healthcare matters. Overall, Chelsea Clinton stressed that the next president should be someone who not only pushes to maintain the values of our country, but also implements them in their own life, something she believes Hillary Clinton practices.

After speaking on behalf of her thoughts, she opened the room up to the audience. She answered questions about Hillary’s stance on environmental issues, budgets, national security, gun control, and college debts. She also commented that she believes her mother’s increased suitability for this election results from her time working as the Secretary of State under President Obama.

One of the most poignant answers Chelsea gave was in reference to the misogyny that Hillary receives.

“I don’t remember a time when my mother wasn’t being attacked,” Clinton said.

She stressed that the political experience her mother has makes those comments background noise. Clinton also emphasized that her mom’s life in the public eye makes her a strong individual who can handle issues using the knowledge she’s accumulated throughout her career.

On the eve of the democratic primary, Chelsea Clinton was able to provide a personal point of view on Hillary Clinton not only as a presidential candidate but also as a parent.
