Budget Friendly Vacation Alternatives

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

Let’s face it, vacations are expensive. Although it isn’t fun to dish out hundreds of dollars towards a week-long trip, it also isn’t fun missing out on it altogether. If heading down to Mexico to sip on Pina Coladas for a week isn’t in your future, try these ideas out instead.

explore a nearby city

Plane tickets can be really expensive, especially during the time of warm weather. Save some money on travel by taking a day trip to a nearby city. Some cities to look into are Charlotte, NC; Charleston, SC; Hilton Head, SC; and Savannah, GA. A quick day trip will satisfy your wanderlust, while also saving you some money.

plan a staycation

Despite seeming like you know everything about where you live, chances are there is much more for you to explore. Spring break is the perfect time to wander around and become a tourist in your own city. Maybe there is a hiking trail you have always wanted to go try or a restaurant that you have always wanted to eat at but never had the time to. Now is the perfect time to check out all that your city has to offer.

make plans that you will look forward to

Plan out fun activities to do with your friends to keep things interesting. You could hang out with your friends as you usually would, but try getting creative and spicing it up to give yourself something to look forward to during the break. You can celebrate your time off from school by planning anything from a fancy dinner party, to a charcuterie night, to a movie marathon.

give yourself time to relax

You can still enjoy the highlights of a typical summer without having to go anywhere. Who’s to say that you can’t sip tropical drinks from the comfort of your own home? There is nothing stopping you from whipping out your blender and making yourself and your friends a batch of Pina Coladas and tanning at a nearby pool. Just because you aren’t on an official vacation doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take time and relax.

Summer doesn’t always have to be in the form of an expensive trip to a faraway destination. You can have just as much fun spending your summer locally!
