Phases of Moving Into a New Dorm Room: The Good, The Bad And The Sparkly

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Phase 1- The Move Out

You start out making a packing list. Like a really big list. It’s kind of exhausting just looking at it.

Then the actual packing starts, and it’s taking forever. OMG why do I have so much stuff?

Eventually, your room at home is looking pretty empty. Oh no, here come the waterworks!

Phase 2- The Move In

But now you’re getting excited to move in! Hanging with your friends, no parental supervision, and the hard part of packing is over, right?

Oh wait. Now we have to get everything in the room. And unpack. Ugh. We can only pray there will be carts and fast elevators.

Okay, everything is in the room! And it looks… like a hot mess.

Phase 3- The Good

And then your roomie arrives. Get ready to live the dream!

Except now the room is even messier with all this stuff.

Dad is trying not to curse your furniture into oblivion. (“Some assembly required is a phrase that came right out of Hell!”) But insists he can do it.

Mom is fussing. Over you, the bed, the mirror placement, the fluffiness of the pillows.

And you love them! But there’s way too many people in here and somebody has to go.

Phase 4- The Good

Eventually, it’s just you and your roomie. #Blessed with awesome décor and a nice comfy bed… Okay, so the other stuff can wait. It’s nap time. You deserve it!

That nap? Yeah, you slept like 5 hours. Whoops! But now you have time to hang all of your wall art!

Phase 5- The Sparkly

OMG everything looks so cute! …And glittery. That stuff got EVERYWHERE. That’s not going away anytime soon.

And then it’s finally over! Done! WE DID IT!

Wait, what do you mean classes start tomorrow?
