Keeping Up With The Carb-dashians: A Food Diary

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

While scrolling through Instagram, where nearly 90% of my feed is overtaken by food accounts, and I realized just how much our lives revolve around food. Even social media praises extraordinary goodies with hilarious captions (@missnewfoodie is a personal favorite). Food isn’t just for survival, it is basically an entertainment factor! We schedule our days around meals, look forward to each one, and make efforts to experience new types of culinary creations. Unfortunately, school dining halls don’t particularly fulfill the craving for a hearty home cooked meal loaded with fresh veggies and edible love. I can’t wait to take squash and mashed potatoes through an IV over Thanksgiving break. Until then, I’ll be waiting for an invite to Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg’s potluck dinner party from the blessed tables of Alliot.

Food plays a huge role at college and sometimes the dining hall isn’t the most convenient option. Having snacks in your dorm room is so helpful, but can cause quite a bit of emotional distress. You become unusually protective. You subconsciously take inventory of your snacks after every trip to the grocery store and warn prospective thieves that your snacks are exclusively for you. On the other hand, it is such a tease when your friends come home with yummier munchies to taunt you.

After exams, intense study sessions, or really any mentally draining activity, food is there for you. Snacks are comforting in such a way that outcompetes all contenders. Rough day? Go eat.

Luckily, at St. Mike’s, we have the beloved Einstein’s to fulfill our stress-food desires. They have every sort of greasy comfort food you could ever need. A bagel and coffee to get your day started, cheesy fries to accompany your movie night, and popcorn chicken to drunkenly satisfy your taste buds.

Another SMC favorite feast comes every Saturday and Sunday morning: Brunch. There is no doubt that we all mentally and physically prepare days in advance for this incredible combination of lunch and breakfast. I have no shame in waking up every weekend anxious to eat my weight in waffles along with a small side of six plates of curly fries.

One complaint, that everyone seems to have, pertains to that extremely awkward block of time between breakfast and brunch. From 8:30am to 9:30am, when a majority of people are waking up and looking for their first meal of their Saturday or Sunday, neither Einstein’s nor Alliot are open. Over the course of this long hour and a half, not only is there concern for my wellbeing, but also for my bank account. A quick trip to Dunkin’s is always so tempting.

So, next time you’re bored, stressed, happy, or sad, go eat your heart out in any way you desire. A trip to brunch, Einstein’s, or maybe even stealing your roommate’s yummies will do just the trick!
