A College Student’s Guide to: Wine

Ahhh, wine. The drink of the Gods, moms, and … college students! Yes, you heard me right, college students can enjoy a nice glass of Pinot Grigio too! While wine can seem a bit mature for our adolescent palates, nothing screams “I’m classy, and I know it!” like a fresh box of Franzia kept chilled in your mini fridge.

Over my college years I, a self proclaimed wine guru, have gained superior expertise on wine that fits every mood and budget. With the help of other experienced wine drinkers, I have selected a few fan favorites…

Sauvignon Blanc – Barefoot

Crisp and fruity, this wine screams sunshine! Which is necessary in all seasons.

Price: $9.99 Double Bottle

Best Paired with: Veggies or white cheddar Annie’s Mac n’ Cheese, some soft jams, and mood lighting.

Smooth Red Blend – Yellow Tail

Red wine can be extra intimidating but this one is a smooth transition into the rich, lush, sophistication that is red wine. Easy to sip, easier to share!

Price: $10.99 Double Bottle

Best Paired with: Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, all your best gal pals, and a much needed gossip sesh!

Pinot Grigio – The Charles Shaw label

One of Trader Joe’s best ‘two-buck chucks’ means a college student priced classic! This Pinot can stand alone or mixed with bubbly water becomes a fun spritzer.

Price: $2.99

Best Paired with: top of the line Maruchan Ramen noodles, a Friday night, and hype girl jams *Alexa play Formation by Beyoncé* !

Rose – Simpler Wines

Another Trader Joe’s special, this canned wine is conveniently prepped and packaged to tag along on your next adventure.

Price: $4.00 for a 4-pack

Best Paired with: a bag of your favorite chips, a beach or mountain top, and a hint of romance.

Crisp White – Franzia

Box aged… I mean aged in an oak barrel and then boxed… but honestly boxed wine is in so who cares! You don’t have to be a sommelier to love this refreshing wine.

Price: $15.99 for a 5L Box

Best Paired with: a late night chicken patty from the grill, a monogrammed Yeti tumbler, and endless (later regretted) Tinder swipes.

Cabernet Sauvignon – Woodbridge

A medium-bodied wine… whatever that means! All I know is this wine packs a punch of flavor and ‘tude!

Price: $12.99 Double Bottle

Best Paired with: buttery popcorn, roomies, and Netflix’s sappiest, original rom-com.
