Campus Cutie: Elissa Desmarais

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

You’ve probably seen this short little blondie in the hallways of St. Mike’s, but most of you haven’t seen her on the pitch getting rough and rowdy playing rugby. She’s sweet and determined, and is the best kind of friend to have.

Hometown: Hampton Falls, New Hampshire

YOG: 2020

Major: Psychology

Fun fact: I have been to 30 countries!

HC: How did you decide to choose Saint Michael’s?

ED: I chose Saint Mike’s after I did an overnight here and didn’t want to go home at the end of it. Originally, I hadn’t really even considered Saint Mike’s as a serious option, but after I visited the campus I felt like I belonged here.

HC: Why did you chose to be a psychology major?

ED: I chose to be a psychology major because I am fascinated with understanding people and their brains and why we do the things we do.

HC: What are you involved on campus?

ED: I am on the Women’s Rugby Team

HC: Tell us about your rugby career?

ED: I joined last fall with a bunch of friends because it was a sport I had never tried and I wanted to get involved on campus and challenge myself. Last year we were undefeated in our conference and made it to the Elite Eight in Kutztown, PA. I was out last season because I have endometriosis that was really bad at that time. It was an uphill battle to get back on the field but I finally played in my first game since last spring today. I love rugby and I love all of my teammates.

HC: You were out because of an illness. Can you tell us about that?

ED: Last summer I had to have a laparoscopic surgery on my stomach through which I was diagnosed with endometriosis. When I was diagnosed I was surprised to hear that one in 10 women have endometriosis. The illness occurs when uterine tissue grows outside of your uterus and latches on to other parts of your body, such as tendons, organs, etc.

HC: Are you excited for junior year?

ED: Yes I am so excited! I am planning to study abroad in Grenoble, France next spring for my French minor and I am very excited. I am also looking forward to our fall rugby season and living with my friends!
