12 Things That Happen Living With Your Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

College is our first time living away from home, as well as our first time living with other people. Luckily for some, the people on your floor become your best friends, and your second family.

1. There is no such thing as knocking.

Doors are never locked, and you have no qualms with barging in at all times of the day. The few times you run into a locked door, you have no idea how to react other than to back away slowly.

2. You have one collective wardrobe.

“Hey can I borrow your black booties?”

“Yeah, can I steal that blue bralette I wore last weekend?”

3. No food is safe.

This is one of the few, and definitely the biggest, downside of being close with your neighbors. All of your best snacks mysteriously go missing, even the ones you stash in a “secret” spot.

4. Getting homework done in your room is a myth.

You can never get any work done in your room because you are too tempted to goof around with everyone.

5. You do each other’s laundry.

You never make it to the laundry room without someone throwing a “few” things into your wash. They do the same for you when your underwear drawer is suddenly empty.

6. There is no getting away with anything.

Don’t even consider bringing someone back to your room, unless you want to explain yourself to your friends the next day.

7. Getting ready to go out is a group effort…

You no longer know how to do your own hair and make-up — you rely on your neighbors to be your personal make-up artists and hair stylists.

8. …and half the fun.

9. Sometimes you fight like siblings.

Living with people can be tough, and no matter how much you love each other, you do not always get along. Luckily, you never stay mad for long.

10. Someone is always in your bed.

More often than not you come home to someone curled up in your bed.

11. You never have to do anything alone.

Whether it’s watching TV in your room, going to the dining hall, the library, or the gym, you can always find someone to keep you company.

12. You have a support team at all times.

Without asking, someone is always there for you in your times of need. In good times and bad your neighbors are always there to hold you up, be the ears you complain to, the shoulders you cry on, and the first to know when the only cure is chocolate and pizza. They turn your dorm into your home, and become your second family.
