Why “Discover Weekly Day” Should Be Your Favorite Holiday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SLU chapter.

I’m sure there’s something you hate.

I know that for the vast majority of my life, I lived in fear of a new school week. I lived for the weekends, and then I wasted them counting down the hours until it was Monday again. My mind was occupied with thoughts of tests and sitting through lectures and what if my homework piles up because I use all of my time being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of work I have to do on a daily basis…?

What was my issue? I never had anything to look forward to. All I was doing was anticipating what I didn’t like. This grows exhausting very quickly, and can sometimes make life seem tedious and not very meaningful. The key is to switch your perspective and find something you’re passionate about even in a bad situation. And if what you’re passionate about is finding new music, well, have I got the solution for you: Discover Weekly Day.

“Your weekly mixtape of fresh music. Enjoy new music and deep cuts picked for you. Updates every Monday.”

Such a simple sentence carries such significance.

I am a fairly recent Spotify convert. Up until last year, I existed on my Apple Music family plan, which was cancelled and caused my mad scramble for the wildly-reasonably-priced Spotify student plan (not sponsored). I then embarked on a journey of musical self discovery that, while a little rocky at first, has led me to where I am now.

Something that I will regret probably forever is that for the first couple of months, I used my account solely for listening to smooth jazz while occupied with homework. From there however, I branched out to making hyper-specific playlists from songs that I was already very familiar with. I added songs that were popular on TikTok, and then I discovered podcasts. I had a very heavy podcast phase: fiction podcasts and review podcasts and podcasts about things I was only very loosely associated with. This past summer, however, I wandered over to the “Discover Weekly” tab, and for the first time, I listened to it. I genuinely believe that you should expose yourself to new experiences as much as possible, and the ability to have a designated time and place to find new music is incredibly important to me. I soon began to look forward to every Monday: when I could see that tab refresh, giving way to a new week and a fresh start, and when I could open my phone to that text from one of my best friends: “happy discover weekly day, nerd.”

I know I’ve spent all this time hyping up Discover Weekly as the cure to your problems, but it’s about changing your mindset and entering into a situation with the good kind of excitement instead of the bad kind of anticipation. Now, I’m not necessarily saying that you should love music and Mondays—what I am saying is to find something that you enjoy about something you don’t and turn it into your Discover Weekly day. The goal is to find something that lights a spark in you—something that allows you to look forward to something you’ve always dreaded.
