40 Signs You Go to Saint Louis University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SLU chapter.

The vibrant Saint Louis University, a private Jesuit University, contains a diverse student body. Despite cultural and academic differences, the students of SLU share characteristics and sentiments unique to their university. Here are 40 of those memories and experiences, fondly appreciated by all students.

  1. Only going to the Simon Recreation Center for your COVID-19 test.
  2. Getting in line for Starbucks only to see one worker making drinks.
  3. Subway being open even if there was an apocalypse.
  4. Experiencing the West Pine Effect: always running into someone you know on West Pine.
  5. SLU hammock culture emerging when the weather gets up to 70 degrees.
  6. Randomly getting handed an energy drink as you walk down West Pine to class.
  7. STEM majors and pre-meds complaining about ALEKS (IYKYK).
  8. Only excitedly waking up early for class registration and Mardi Gras festivities.
  9. Never having enough flex as a freshman, junior or senior
  10. Having too much flex as a sophomore, which goes toward Starbucks cups.
  11. Going paddle-boating in Forest Park on a nice weekend.
  12. Studying outside by the clock tower only to find that you cannot see anything on your screen.
  13. Going to the library for Einstein’s only to find that the espresso machine is down.
  14. Getting lit at Paint SLU and then jumping into the fountain after.
  15. Spending too much money at Pickleman’s at 1 a.m. on a weeknight.
  16. Always being woken up by DPS notifications and then calls from concerned parents.
  17. Seeing how many people can fit into an elevator for 8 and 9 a.m. classes.
  18. Someone trying to change your political beliefs at 8 a.m. at the Grand crosswalk.
  19. Wondering why only the basketball boys have golf cart access.
  20. Running home for bid day only to be stopped at the Grand crosswalk.
  21. Non-health majors going to South Campus only for Fresh Gatherings.
  22. All health majors thinking Fresh Gatherings is overrated.
  23. “cUrA pErSoNaLiS”
  24. Only going to a SLU athletic event for free merch.
  25. Never paying full price at Papa John’s because of the constant profit shares.
  26. Getting lost in City Lofts and the Standard.
  27. Watching the sunrise with fellow students at the Arch or admiring the Arch from different angles on campus.
  28. Studying by the on-campus koi pond.
  29. Not knowing the backstory behind the new Dolphin Pond (unless you’re in the class of 2022—and then you probably know too much).
  30. Ordering a SLU ride and the wait time is 45 minutes.
  31. Being humbled by using an umbrella when it’s raining AND windy.
  32. Knowing that most of your tuition goes toward landscaping (#SLUlips).
  33. Patiently waiting for Humphrey’s to open back up.
  34. Knowing a person lives in Reinert by how confidently they jaywalk.
  35. Getting winded walking up the hill in the middle of campus.
  36. Looking at the hopeful high school students during the campus tours, and remembering why you chose SLU.
  37. Freddy P. saying hello to you on campus, and feeling like you met a celebrity.
  38. Knowing people who applied to work in the library and never got responses.
  39. Rubbing the Billiken’s stomach for good luck.
  40. Not really knowing what a Billiken is, but accepting that it is the best mascot.
