Spring Trends 2011 (If It Ever Arrives!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

With spring around the corner, it’s time to throw off those heavy sweaters and get into something a little lighter. Not sure what’s on trend this season? Wondering if you can carry over trends from winter or is it time for something entirely new? Here are a few exciting ways to amp up your wardrobe for spring!

1. One of the hottest trends for this season is ‘70s inspired. Updated versions of bell-bottoms, platforms, and draped maxi dresses are popping up everywhere. Wear your bell-bottoms with a trench for the chillier spring days, match platforms with a peasant blouse, or long dresses with some metallic strappy sandals for a disco effect.

2. Hot colors, minimal lines: Color blocking, or pairing big, simple shapes of colors together, is a fresh look for your spring wardrobe after the drab shades of winter. Keep the lines of your outfit understated and clean, and bring the drama with vivid shades. Take this even further by going for a monochromatic look; different shades of the same color family make color blocking easy!

3. Stripes, stripes, stripes! Stripes are very in this season—whether French-inspired or athletic, striped pieces are a staple of this spring’s wardrobe. Mix and match different stripe sizes for an unexpectedly chic look. You know you’ve got stripes in your closet, so wear them!

4. Jean on jean: Yes, the “Canadian Tuxedo” is cool this spring. J. Crew went a little overboard with their denim jumpsuit, but when toned down the trend is much more wearable. Pair a light jean shirt on top with darker jean shorts for the perfect effect.

5. Spring accessories are all about animal life—specifically bugs! Your favorite (or least favorite) creepy crawlers get the bejeweled treatment this season, and broaches, bracelets, and shoes take on subterranean specimens in both cute and creepy ways. Go for the more garden appropriate versions a la Carolina Herrera, or take a fantastical approach in the vein of Alexander McQueen.
