Saratoga Salons: A Skidmore Girl’s Best Friend?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

Are you looking to treat yourself to a relaxing mani/pedi after a tough week of papers and tests? Do you want a professional blowout for graduation day or a job interview?  How about a fresh new haircut, style, and color now that warmer weather is finally on its way!? Skidmore girls (and boys), look no further than downtown Saratoga Springs for all of your grooming needs. But read carefully, because not all salons are rated equal!

Hello Nails Inc.

Unfortunately, Saratoga Springs is really lacking in amazing inexpensive nail salons, but if you’re in need of a quick manicure or pedicure Hello Nails Inc. will do the trick.  Located in the Congress Plaza near CVS at 26 Congress Street, this salon is never too busy so walk-ins are conveniently welcome.  Make sure to be clear that you do not want your cuticles cut because they tend to go a bit overboard (A friend of mine left with a bloody thumb!). On a positive note, while your finger or toenails dry, one of the nail technicians gives you an amazing and strong five-minute neck massage!  I highly recommend a spa pedicure with a 15-minute leg massage and exfoliating gel treatment.

Pro Nails
I would definitely think twice about going to Pro Nails Salon, located on 423 Broadway.  They are overpriced, unfriendly, dirty, and are not meticulous when applying nail polish.  Instead of stopping at Pro Nails, you might as well go right next door to Plum Dandy to enjoy a happy and guilt-free dessert experience!

Manicures – $15
Pedicures – $30

Crystal Palace
This nail salon is a bit of a trek for those students who don’t have cars.  It’s located at 3057 Route 50 in the same strip mall as Hatties and Chipotle. I had a very strange experience there a few weeks ago. I thought that I could just walk in and when I asked the nail technicians if they could accommodate me for a simple manicure, they looked at me as though I was completely crazy. However, I have spoken to other Skidmore students who really love this place.

Hair Creations

This high-end, intimate hair salon located at 12 Phila Street only uses Bumble and bumble products on their clients and also offer the hair care line for retail.  The stylists cater to your specific hair type and explain prior to the hair treatment what products they will use on your hair and why. They are very professional, clean, and most importantly, they want the costumer to exit their salon doors with a better understanding of how to keep his or her hair healthy and beautiful!  Ask for Anne, my personal favorite.  She’s sweet, hip, funny, and very knowledgeable!

Classical Concepts
Located at 323 Broadway, Classical Concepts only uses Aveda products and provides very good customer service with its hard working hair stylists, nail technicians, and spa specialists.  It’s a one-stop shop for all of your beauty needs!  It seems that the majority of Skidmore students go here to get their haircut and they are overall happy with the outcome. Prices for haircuts depend on hair length and thickness.

Fusion the Salon
Located at 512 Broadway, this is the closest hair salon to campus, especially if you are travelling by foot. Fusion carries the full line of Moroccan Oil, L’Oreal Professional, Sebastian, and Color Mark products and you can choose which you would like to use on your hair.  Not only does this salon cut, color, and style hair, but it also has hired makeup artists to perform makeovers starting at $50 if you are in need of some professional help for a special event!

The Roosevelt Baths and Spa
If you have the car, the time, and the money, I highly recommend indulging in the first rate services that the Roosevelt Baths and Spa have to offer.  Located at 39 Roosevelt Drive down the road from the Gideon Putnam Hotel, the spa was created in the 1930’s under the guidance of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who strongly believed in the health benefits of mineral water. Today, the spa offers a wide range of services, from massages and mineral baths to manicure and hair styling, all at quite reasonable prices for the lavish nature of the experience.  With its charming art deco architecture, you are sure to forget about the hustle bustle of 2011, mentally entering a different time and place all together. Thank you President Roosevelt!  If you need further confirmation of this spa’s excellence, it has recently been listed in the Top 10 New York State Green Destinations! Visit the website at http://www.gideonputnam.com/4363.aspxfor prices on other services.
