New York Fashion Week: What to Watch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

Starting February 9, fashionistas from all over the world will come to New York City for the Mercedes-Benz sponsored New York Fashion Week. Throughout the week, top designers will showcase their Fall 2012 collections, making us allwonder what the designers have in store this season. Not to mention, which celebrities will sit front row at Lincoln Center, and keeping our eyes peeled for Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour and her everymove.

For us college fashionistas, we can only hope that our hard work in college will pay off so that one day we will find ourselves sitting in the front row at a top designers’ shows. In the meantime, here is a preview of what to expect!

Celebrity Hot-Spots:
Other than the front row of top designers, we can expect to see celebrities at the following trendy venues: 10ak, Catch, Abe & Arthur’s, and the Double Seven, all of which are located in the Meatpacking District. In addition, The Chelsea Club and the Electric Room at the Dream Hotel, which are normally full of celebrities, will be particularly crawling with notables.  Buzz-worthy restaurants include Acme and Super Linda, a Latin American establishment in Tribeca. Top celebrities expected include Elizabeth Olsen, Rooney Mara, Shailene Woodley, Lana Del Rey and Felicity Jones.

Unexpected Surprises:
Ever been shopping in a taxi? During New York Fashion Week, the city will introduce beauty product shopping while literally, on the go. How will it work? The city will outfit a select fifty cabs equipped for riders to swipe their smart phones over special tags to purchase products. Cabs will feature beauty segments from sources like Glamour magazine, featuring the latest trends!

Hot New Line to Debut:
Remember those Juicy Couture velour track suits from 2005? In 2010, feminine fashion line Juicy Couture’s co-founders, Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor, left the company after creating it in 1996 (due to Liz Claiborne’s acquisiton of Juicy). Since then, the duo formed Skaist-Taylor, which will debut at NYFW. Mum has been the word in terms of the collection, but according to Skaist-Levy, “the collection will be a complete line, with T-shirts, outerwear, pants and luxurious knits. ‘We’re creating pieces that we feel are standouts and that you have to have,” she said. She cited ‘amazing outerwear and incredible basics; that’s how we dress.’ Retail prices will range from $175 for apparel to $3,000 for outerwear … [she also] said color will be a key component of the line. Skaist-Taylor will hit retail stores in Fall 2012.” (Charlotte Cowles, New York Magazine)

Menswear:
Fashion isn’t just for girls! Excitement surrounding menswear collections are on the rise. Last year, everyone was talking about Tim Coppens’ menswear line. This year, according to Style.com, we should keep our eyes peeled for Greg Armas’ Assembley.
