Live the Magis: Send Your Help to the Philippines

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

A couple of weeks ago the second deadliest typhoon on the Philippine region took place: Typhoon Hiyan (or Typhoon Yolanda). It has been classified as a level five super typhoon which means that at its highest peak it reached winds of 145 mph. Most of us have probably seen pictures on our Facebook newsfeed, Twitter or T.V. and the damage is devastating. If you click on the following link, you can see the before and after aerial pictures of Typhoon Hiyan: http://www.abc.net.au/news/specials/typhoon-haiyan-photos-before-after/

The Philippine region has been left completely destroyed. Therfore, since Saint Joe’s always encourages to find ways in which we can help others, this is a great opportunity to give a hand to those in need. We do not need to fly to the Philippines to help. Here are a few ways to get involved:

I know that all of us are in a budget but if you ask your roommates, your RA, or the girls on your floor, you can help together.

The American Red Cross

This organization is providing emergency relief to the Philippines. The Red Cross is really committed to the cause; so far they have brought in around $11 million dollars and they are hoping for more to come. You can visit their webpage and even if it is a small amount of money you can donate, that is completely okay.

The mGive Foundation

The mGive Foundation accepts donations via text. You can text the word AID to short code 80108 to give a $10 donation to the mGive Foundation Philippines Relief Fund on behalf of the U.S. State Department. You can also visit their website and they have a list of other organizations that are providing help to the region.

International Medical Corps

This organization is mostly committed to the health relief aspect of the support. Your donation would help provide medical healthcare and medicines for the victims of the Typhoon.

Please help out by joining the cause. The citizens of the Philippines are in need of your help. Let’s embrace the Magis in this time of need.
