A Girls Guide to Bar Etiquette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

If you’re new to the SJU bar scene, don’t worry, Her Campus SJU is here to provide you with six helpful hints that will guarantee a good night out with friends!

1. Never Buy Your Own Drink

So many are under the impression that when a guy buys a girl a drink, they’re obligated to spend the rest of their night with them. The only thing a girl is ever obligated to do is say thank you!

2. Be Considerate to the Bartender

Do not be one of those sloppy, indecisive customers. Wait your turn, know what you want to order, and leave a tip.

3. Three is the Magic Number

Obviously going to the bar alone is not socially acceptable, and a group of two adds the risk of becoming a third wheel. Going with a large group can be extremely intimidating for guys trying to start up a conversation with you. A group of three guarantees at least one wing woman at all times.

4. Don’t Be That Girl Getting Kicked Out of the Bar

If you or a friend have had too much to drink, leave before you are asked to leave. The quickest way to earn a bad reputation is being “those girls” who got kicked out of the bar.

5. Know Your ID (As Well As Your Friends)

We’ve all been there. That awkward split second when you accidently call your friend by her real name instead of the one on her ID. Don’t be that girl who ruins someone else’s night!

6. Never Trust The Bar Lighting

Always get the OK from a friend before leaving the bar with a guy. Getting a second opinion can make a world of a difference and save you from the possibility of a regretful walk of shame.

We hope these tips can save you from any embarrassing or awkward encounters at the bar this coming weekend. Of course, the number one rule that goes before any of these is to watch your drink, be safe, and have fun!
