The Do’s and Don’ts of Fall Informal Recruitment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

The hustle and bustle of sorority recruitment is typically a spring semester activity. Two of our sororities, however, this fall semester are participating in Fall Informal Recruitment. Over the next week or so, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Gamma Delta will be having different events (that don’t involve the loud chanting and the crazy decorations, don’t worry). If you’re new to this, look no further, we’ve got a list of Recruitment insider tips of how to make the most of your time.

  • DO come in with an open mind. Although you don’t have a wide variety of choices like you would normally have in the spring, try to forget anything anyone else has told you about either of the sororities. It is best to keep rumors to yourself. The two chapters are unique in their own ways, but are both extremely successful and wonderful chapters.
  • DON’T bash on the other sorority. Besides going in with an open mind, it is important to keep rumors to yourself. No sorority wants someone who isn’t going to be able to get along with other sororities on campus, especially SJU where we are so big on Greek Unity.
  • DO find a way to stand out. Although there aren’t as many girls participating in Fall Informal Recruitment than in the spring Formal Recruitment, you still need to make your mark to have the girls remember you. Whether its wearing a statement piece of jewelry, telling a (really) fun or interesting fact about yourself, or a shirt with a cool pattern, this is an absolute must!
  • DON’T pretend to be somebody you aren’t. If you don’t volunteer at the local animal shelter in your spare time, don’t make that up and tell sisters that. You will end up in the sorority that you are meant to end up in because you feel a connection with those sisters, and they will like you for who you really are, not for what you want to be.
  • DO come prepared with questions. Sometimes conversations can get dull, and then, then inevitable happens: the person you’re talking to asks “do you have any questions for me?” Coming prepared with questions allows sisters to see that you are taking this seriously and genuinely want to learn more about the chapter. It could be as simple as “how many girls are in the sorority?” to something more serious such as “what kind of philanthropy events do you do?”
  • DON’T overdue your outfit. You don’t need to be dressed like you’re going out or staying in. Wear something that reflects your style. Keep it classy, naturally.
  • DO your research. You don’t need to write a research paper, but just try and have a little background information on the sorority so sisters know you’re very interested. This will also help keep the conversation!
  • DON’T follow what you’re friends are doing. Listen to your heart and no matter what your friends decide to do, make your own decisions. Greek Life at SJU isn’t like other schools where you can’t talk to someone who is in a different sorority. People in different sororities live together on campus and do things together.
  • DO be ready to talk about yourself. You are the person who knows yourself the best, so don’t feel like you’re being conceited.

As long as you follow these simple do’s and don’ts, you should be well on your way to feeling a bit more confident heading into Informal Recruitment. Remember, it’s called informal for a reason. This is a time to get to know the sisters in a more casual setting.
