Advice From a Senior: Making the Most of Your Time in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

With finals around the corner, it’s hard to believe that the semester is coming to an end!

Time seems to be extra precious during our college years. Whether it be the time you have to complete a last minute paper, the time it takes you to sprint to class in the morning, or the time you have spending with your friends, time seems to fleeing swiftly by us without our control. Before we know it, our time spent in college will be sweet memories and we will be forced to face the big bad world. Therefore, I asked senior, Steph Lovina, to give her advice on making the most of your time in college. Steph is one of those girls on campus that everyone knows! She is sweet, funny, incredibly involved and is always the life of the party. Steph is the perfect example of someone who has made the most of their college years! Take a look at Steph ‘s advice for making the most of your time in college:

1. Don’t limit yourself to one thing. Take chances with different groups of people and different events. It’s okay to be a “floater” and dip your toes into different activities and social circles. Be an athlete that does service or a business major in the plays. Explore the endless possibilities SJU has to offer.

 2. Be thrifty! The worst feeling is having to say no to doing fun things to lack of funds, so don’t unnecessarily splurge on a meal out. It’s worth it, but is it worth it?

3. Plan ahead. When you get to be a senior, you realize how many opportunities were and are available at Saint Joseph’s. That’s when graduation becomes hard because all you can think about are the things you didn’t and no longer can do as an undergraduate student at SJU. So discover your options early and plan ahead!

4. Allow yourself to fail. Failure is the only thing that paves the way to self-discovery.

5. Step outside your comfort zone. By stepping outside of your comfort zone, you can truly discover your capabilities, limitations, and fears in the rawest form possible.

One thing I would tell my freshmen self: Slow down. Nothing in the world ends as definitively and abruptly as your college career. Enjoy the little things and take the time to look around and truly appreciate every moment.

Steph is a senior at Saint Joseph’s University. She is involved in the co-op program, Appalachia leader, traveled to El Paso this winter with WIP to El, weekly service leader at Cristo Rey, led the upperclassmen retreat 4:16 this year, Hawk Host, and on the Senior Gift Committee (SJUGives).

Steph truly exemplifies the positive qualities of someone who has made the most of their college experience. Take note of Steph’s advice so that YOU can do the same!

HCXO,
