A Letter to My Best Friend

By: Tabatha Pelletier

Dear best friend,

It was eight years ago that I went with my family to buy a puppy. That’s the day I fell in love with you and we chose each other. You were two, you looked at me with that adorable smile and I was sold. It was love I knew it already. I held you in my arms for the first time and that was when our friendship began.

For the next eight years you would turn my life into one amazing adventure after another. We did everything together, and I spoiled you more than myself. Whatever you wanted, it was yours. Endless car rides and walks in the park. Treats for days, a constant stream of new toys, and taking over my bed even though you were only six pounds. I just wanted to make you happy. We would snuggle close for hours on end through every tearful bad day I ever had, you never left my side.

So when you were hurting and you needed me I never left your side. I wanted to give back to you what you gave to me, the most amazing memories that I’ll be able to cherish for the rest of my life. You held on for me knowing that I would never let you go. And for that I want to thank you. Thank you for giving me more time, thank you for helping me accept that it was time for you to go. I didn’t understand how you could leave me so soon, I was angry, but I understand now and it’s okay. You stayed long enough to make our last moments count, our last memories together. And we made those some of the happiest memories that we have ever had.

It has been two days since you let go, but it feels like forever. You will always be my best friend and I’ll always cherish the bond we shared together. You taught me how to love like never before, and you taught me how to live again. You taught me that things will always get better and you taught me about the importance of friendship. Although right now it feels like I’ll be sad forever I know eventually I’ll be able to count on those happy memories to make me smile again. I love you so much and thank you for always loving me endlessly everyday and for giving me the best eight years of my entire life. You will always be the greatest gift I ever received.

            I love you best friend.
