HOW TO DEAL WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS DURING COLLEGE

By: Rachel Nazay

College life is hard, no doubt about it. But, for those who have a mental illness, every day tasks can sometimes require more effort and cause more stress in the long run. Trying to balance a job, social life, sleep, and keeping mentally stable is a tedious task. Luckily, there are many sources given to keep us all in check.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH AN ON-CAMPUS PSYCHATRIST/COUNSELOR

Thankfully, most colleges have a Wellness Center or care building that have counselors waiting to be booked. If you’re far away from home and need to see a therapist, see a CRISIS representative, or get refills on medication, they can help fit your needs and make your life a little easier.

STAY ORGANIZED/SCHEDULE

Keeping a schedule is imperative for college. Writing everything out in one place can help relieve stressors and keep you refraining from other harmful stress outlets. Color coordination always helps, as well.

HAVE A HEALTHY OUTLET

Personally, I know journaling is one of the best outlets a person could have to express their thoughts and feelings. Getting involved in school activities is also another healthy outlet, and can help you make friends in the process! Going on runs, listening to music, or just simply writing everything done are great examples of healthy outlets.

CREATE A SUPPORT SYSTEM/TALK IT OUT

One of the biggest aspects of dealing with any mental illness is having a support system. These are people you trust with your life, and can go to for anything. If you’re having an issue with school, feeling triggered or stressed out, these are the people you go to that will calm you down. College work can pile up quickly, so discussing your classes with someone is always helpful.

KNOW YOU’RE NOT ALONE

3 in 10 college students have reported a form of mental illness. Chances are, you’re not alone at school. Some schools have groups that come together to talk about their issues and usually help other people. Always remember that you’re not alone and that there are many other people out there who are going through the same exact thing that you are. Don’t silence yourself; speak up and make a change.

Biographies are always the worst to write, because if you glamorize yourself, you're considered vain. If you talk too little about yourself, it doesn't satisfy the readers needs. My name is Rachel. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candle lit dinners, and a romantic movie on Netflix. Kidding. I've been writing short stories and poems ever since I can remember, so to say that I enjoy writing is an understatement. I am so thankful to be apart of HerCampus and all the amazing opportunities coming up!
I'm Nicole! Nikki, Nic, anything you want to call me really. I'm from south-eastern Pennsylvania and I love life and beauty. Whenever I'm not writing or taking pictures for my blogs or social media accounts, you can find me (hopefully) at the beach surfing, traveling, making new friends and seeing new places. I'm in love with people I've never met and places I've never been to. I am currently a Senior (!!!) at Shippensburg University, majoring in Communications Journalism (focusing in Public Relations) and minoring in Psychology. I would love to work for a PR firm with advertising, event planning and perhaps a chance to travel. Thanks for reading!! - Nicole
