Condom carnival

By: Morgan-Victoria Johnson

Talking about sex in college isn’t an uncommon topic, but when you talk about RA’s having a condom carnival you might be taken away! McLean Hall and StoneRidge collaborated to make a program April 21st in the CUB MPR. Over 150 students showed up and enjoyed the many games that took place. Students enjoyed food, prizes and games! They wanted to do an event that was different, fun, but also educational and the turnout was extraordinary.

One of the Resident Assistants on the planning committee, Evan Jones said, that this was a “Great event. Educating students about safe sex and talking about it openly in the community was a beneficial experience.” Different RA’s had stations with activities. Some of the activities were educating students how to make and use dental dam for safe oral sex, there was a safe word poster, ring tosses, corn hole, a pinata and more!

When planning this program they thought about the pros and cons to doing a program so open. But they decided that this would bring a lot of attention to the fact that college students still need to be educated on something they will participate in if they have not already. McLean and Stoneridge bought 1,000 condoms for this event and they ended the night with zero! They were surprised and happy that many people took the time to engage in what was happening.

When they decided to give away prizes, they were given Consent is Sexy T-Shirts from the women’s center. To win a shirt, students were asked questions about what they learned throughout the night and from the information that was posted on the walls. Many students answered them immediately. This event was truly a learning experience for everyone. Some of tge RAs who were a part of the planning process said that they even learned a thing or two about safe sex.

These two buildings reached their goals when it came to educating students about safe sex in a fun way.

Whenever I'm not writing or taking pictures for my blogs or social media accounts, you can find me (hopefully) at the beach surfing, traveling, making new friends and seeing new places. I'm in love with people I've never met and places I've never been to. I am currently a Senior (!!!) at Shippensburg University, majoring in Communications Journalism (focusing in Public Relations) and minoring in Psychology. I would love to work for a PR firm with advertising, event planning and perhaps a chance to travel. Thanks for reading!! - Nicole
