The Life of an overachieving Lumberjack: Lashirine Howard

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFA chapter.

LaShirine Howard became a student at SFA in the fall of 2014. Now that she is finishing the first semester of her junior year, she has already met so many goals she set up for herself. She is not only a member of various organizations, but she is also a part of the Residence Hall Association, she is an employee for two campus jobs and you may have seen her appear on the SFA channel as a TV anchor for SFA Now and East Texas Explorer. Howard is already meeting so many goals she has set for herself and is thriving above the ordinary line, but the best is yet to come; she has so much more she hopes to accomplish before she graduates!

Howard is a Mass Communication major, focusing in broadcast television. She is currently an intern for ESPN, where she helps assist in filming sports for the school. She has worked games for Lumberjack football, soccer and basketball! She also has helped assist filming the Ring Dip Ceremony that is held every semester for seniors who are receiving their class rings.

She has excellent work ethic— anything that she can be a part of to obtain more experience for her profession is going to be something she gives 100 percent every time.

Howard is also currently finishing her semester in studio production where students have to write and produce their own show. She is so hardworking and reliable: Not only did she volunteer to run her own production first, but she has helped assist several students in her class to be the host of their show. Moreover, she has visited the radio in Lufkin and spoke live on air. She is very hands-on and likes to be a part of everything she can to help aid her.

That’s not all!

Howard’s role in the Residence Life Department is extremely important. She is a community assistant and works in the front desk of her dorm hall. She puts on events for her hall and invites other students around the campus to also join in on activities she hosts.

“Working as a CA you need to be very creative and ahead of the game,” Howard says. “Whenever I think of programs or events for my residents, I prepare and make sure it’s exactly what they want so they’ll have a good time.”

Every event she puts on has been successful thus far. In addition, she has been promoted to the assistant hall director!

“It’s a very rewarding position to have because you can develop time-management skills and connect to so many different groups of people,” Howard says.

Howard plans to keep striving to be the best student, employee and future graduate she can be.

She says, “All I hope to seek and gain from myself is be true to myself and not let the media define me; that I can change the world one aspect at a time.”
