Although its primary purpose is that of a fundraising event for Sewanee’s outreach trip to Haiti, Sewanee Idol serves the additional function of being a perfect opportunity to scope out the newly-shaken pledge classes. For those of you who were unable to attend this annual dance competition (or for those of you who were too intoxicated to remember), here is a quick recap of the performances that graced the 2014 Sewanee Idol stage:

Held on Saturday night in the Phi Society’s party barn, where a disco ball and the famous moose head really lent character to the setting, the pledge classes of Sigma Nu, Phi Kappa Epsilon, Theta Pi, Phi Gamma Delta, Theta Kappa Phi, and Kappa Alpha competed for the coveted Zaxby’s chicken platter prize.

Cheered on by the rowdy crowd, Sigma Nu’s boys were the first group to take the stage. Their performance to “Whip It” and “Beez in the Trap” consisted of fledgling choreography punctuated by moments of shirtless flailing and pulling girls from the crowd onto stage.

Up next was the PKE pledge class. On the crowded stage, they executed an energetic dance rendition to a mash-up of party classics, like Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands” and Lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss”.

The next group to perform was last year’s champions, the girls of Theta Pi sorority. To a provocative mix of Britney Spears’s “Baby One More Time,” Ginuwine’s “Pony,” and Kelis’s “Milkshake,” the girls rocked a well-choreographed dance routine, complete with coordinating outfits. Their performance received two thumbs up from the judges.

Fiji’s pledge class claimed the stage for a dance routine that began with a song from Disney’s Mulan soundtrack (a wise choice; who doesn’t love Disney?) before morphing into a rendition of 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop” in which assless chaps made an appearance.

Following that inspiring performance, the TKP girls assembled on stage in coordinating black outfits for their routine. After a shortly delayed start, the pledge class nicely executed their signature dance to Beyoncé’s hit “Love on Top”.

Last but certainly not least, the KA pledges brought a rousing performance of Pitch Perfect that the Barden Bellas would be proud of. The success of their crowd-pleasing reproduction of the film’s song and dance was only heightened by the boys’ choice to incorporate a shirtless finale. Kudos to KA.

After intense deliberation, the judges called for an encore from both TKP and Theta Pi. Both pledge classes returned to the stage to rehash their dance routines, this time with the added guidance of their pledge trainers/choreographers. After both groups performed, the judges announced the results: KA was declared to be the well-deserving runner-up and Theta Pi claimed its second consecutive win, upholding its status as the reigning queens of Sewanee Idol.
