My Life with the Water Boys: The newest toxic love triangle to reach Netflix

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

**Spoilers Ahead**

Based on Ali Novak’s 2012 novel, The series tells the story of Jackie whose family unfortunately passed away in a car accident. She must end up leaving all she knows to move to Sliver Falls, Colorado with her mom’s best friend’s family. Jackie must change her old life of accelerated classes for boyish pranks and missing her family. Throughout the show, she ends up making connections with two of the oldest brothers of the family: Cole Walter, who is losing direction after an injury ruins his football career, and Alex Walter, Cole’s younger brother, who’s more of a book nerd who loves horseback riding.

Overall, the story is incredibly sweet. Jackie has always had a direct focus on life until she moves to Sliver Falls. Both Alex and Cole are responsible for helping her show the magic of small-town living. Alex, when he showed her the nature of Colorado, helped her face her fear of jumping from the loft. Cole, when he was trying to get her to open near the watering hole and trying to fix the teapot for her. The rest of the Walter family had their own journeys with Jackie, and it was so enjoyable to watch.

The love triangle between both brothers is addicting to watch throughout the series. Some incidents between the three of them made me super uncomfortable. The background of the show, most importantly the Paige incident, made me really confused about the romance between them. She interacted with everyone else and she seemed ditzy at the idea that one should not say no to Cole Walter. Alex Walter seems so angry at the idea even though he is figuring out his female relationships with Jackie and Kelsey. Then with this whole love triangle, they portrayed Cole to be such a man-whore going through all these women and then pursuing Jackie. It just felt like one walking stereotype after another, and I did not like it.

Netflix and other shows have followed the same romantic triangle formula reusing it again which is boring. It is usually portraying the two boys on two opposite poles like in The Kissing Booth and or the Twilight Franchise. There is the dark guy with a set of unforeseeable issues that the female main character is instantly drawn towards. Then there is the golden retriever guy who should be the first choice but ends up not being so. Then the newest addiction is taking those stereotypes and putting them with brothers like The Summer I Turned Pretty. There is something that should be wrong with them reusing an old romantic interest system that people are honestly super bored about. Living with the Walter Boys is a sweet show about a small town but there are aspects of the show about why it should be a flop because of this formula.
