Dating Your High School Sweetheart in College

Committing to a boyfriend at the innocent age of a high-schooler appeals to some girls because to them that is down right #relationshipgoals. Once they finally find a boy to look at them (even with braces and crimped hair), girls learn how to snatch them up pretty fast. Then, there are those rare relationships, the ones that last through the braces, the Friday night football games, prom and graduation. If you’re lucky enough to make it past that, tackling college is a whole new ballgame.

1. The best and worst part is getting the chance to grow up together. Let’s face it: you’re going to have to find other ways to fill your Friday nights other than cheering on your boyfriend at the football game. Your time will be filled with actual adult conversations that involve politics or even, gulp, getting a job! Learning who you are as a person while trying to accept how your significant other is changing is lots to handle at once. But, it also gives you the opportunity to fall in love all over again.

2. They also become part of your family. They’re probably on a first name basis with your mom and dad and, in some cases, probably end up at your house when you’re not even home. When you’ve dated someone for so long, they likely form their own relationships and bonds with your family. Let’s face it, when your niece loves your boyfriend, it’s pretty freakin’ adorable.

3.You become super comfortable with this person. First date jitters and being afraid to scarf down a large burger are not even a thought in your mind. Starting your relationship in high school allows you to get all of those embarrassing moments past you in an instant. You don’t need to re-live them when mom decides to drag out the photo album…

4. The ultimate perk of dating your high school sweetheart in college? Having your best friend to help you through it all. It may seem as corny as ever, but hey, it’s true! Having a support who knows how crabby you get when you have a test in the morning or who knows that popcorn is your go-to snack is the best. Surprises, pep-talks and just that simple “good luck” will always make your day. Some people may ask whether you get bored or not, but you just laugh and think of all the inside jokes that you two share. Here’s to the couples who make it out of high school and through college, we salute you!
