Cute, Easy and Inexpensive DIY Halloween Costumes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

As Halloween quickly approaches, thinking of costume ideas that you haven’t worn already can be stressful. Not only that, but Halloween costumes also can be scary expensive (ha ha, get it?) If you’re frustrated and don’t know what to dress up as this Halloween, here are some cute, fun and cheap ideas you can put together last minute!

1. Gumball Machine

This costume is super cute and looks so easy to make! To make this costume, you will need: a plain white tank top, a pack of multi-colored pom-pom balls (sold at craft stores), a red skirt, a hot-glue gun and white/ black cardstock to make the 25 cents sign. With the hot glue gun, glue the pom-poms on the tank top. Then, cut the black cardstock to make a 2, 5, and a cents symbol. Glue the numbers and symbols onto the white cardstock. Finally, glue the white cardstock on the red skirt. Now, you’ll be looking as cute as ever being a gumball machine!

2. Fruits

This costume sure is a sweet one to wear with friends. If you want to wear this costume, you’ll need: an oversized t-shirt (color depends on the kind of fruit you want to be), knee-high socks (color also depends on the kind), green construction paper and a variety of paint. With paint and the color shirt of your choice, paint a design (like the ones shown in the picture) that go along with the kind of fruit you want to be. One this is complete, use the green construction paper to design the stem. If the fruit you want to be has no stem, wear a cute hair accessory that matches your costume. If you wear this costume, you’ll be so in season.

3. Peanut Butter & Jelly

This cute, comfy costume is easy to make and is so inexpensive! The first thing you’ll need in order to complete this costume would be: a long brown t-shirt, a long pink t-shirt, white construction paper, an alphabet stencil and a hot glue gun. Taking the white construction paper, place the alphabet stencil over this paper to trace/ cut out the letters, “Peanut Butter” and “Jelly.” From there, you can glue the letters onto the two long tee shirts. Once this is complete, you’ll have the best-looking costume around!

4. Lifeguard

This lifeguard Halloween costume is one that will definitely save the day this Halloween. For this costume, you’ll need: a pair of white shorts, a red jacket, a lifeguard shirt/ tank top and any accessories that you may want to add to the costume (sunglasses, a whistle, etc…) This lifeguard outfit is super easy and will be a lifesaver if you’re running out of costume ideas.

5. Social Media

Want the world to know what your costume is this Halloween? This super simple social media costume will have your Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Pinterest going crazy! For this costume, you’ll need: a oversized t-shirt (color depends on what social media you choose to be), a pair of leggings, white/ black paint and a hair ribbon (color also depends on what social media outlet you choose to be). With this costume, the only thing you’ll need to do is paint the logo of the app that you choose to be. After the paint dries, you’ll be ready to let the world know how awesome your costume is this year!
