A Collegiates’s Guide to Surviving Mercury in Retrograde

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

It is once again that time of year. The first mercury in retrograde of the decade is here. One February 17th Mercury will be retrograding in Pisces. For those not in the know about astrology, you probably have heard about mercury in retrograde through Instagram memes and Cosmo’s snapchat story. So, when it comes up, you’re like what is mercury in retrograde?

As my friends go to on all thing’s astrology, I’ve got you covered.

So, what is mercury in retrograde? Mercury in retrograde happens when Mercury appears to travel backwards in the sky (it’s not actually moving backwards it’s just an illusion) – this will last from February 16th to March 9th. This happens three or four times a year. During this period we’re basically facing a three week communication crisis. Mercury rules communications, habits, technology and travel – so during mercury in retrograde all these things are a mess.

I know what you’re thinking – this can’t be a real thing. However, during these periods people tend to break up and get divorced more. Not only that, but travel plans go astray, technology will not be as reliable, and your more prone to argue with your friends and family. Basically, these periods require lots of patience, flexibility, and attention to how one communicates.

This mercury in retrograde is in Pisces. Pisces is the sign of imaginations, illusions, and hidden agendas. So, surviving this mercury in retrograde is going to entail paying attention. You can’t rely on people to be super upfront with you or take things at face value.

Many times, specific retrogrades are harder for some signs then they are for others. As my friend said to me earlier today, Pisces season sucks for everyone but Pisces. And the retrograde is the same.

Also, Pisces is notorious as being the more sensitive of the signs. I would not try to give anyone an ultimatum – this could go really poorly. If you have a Pisces in your life, you know that they can be super sensitive to any type of pressure. Apply this same logic to Pisces season.

As always during Mercury in retrograde protect all things tech – phones, laptops, documents, etc., etc. Make sure you save everything and keep everything backed up. Don’t keep any beverages close to your computer. Give yourself enough time to submit things that are on deadline – whether it be a paper or a resume. And always make sure your messages and emails sent.

Lastly, in this & all mercury in retrogrades it is super important to be conscious in how you communicate. Do not have serious convos over text, make sure you are careful with how you phrase things. And don’t do anything too crazy.

Although the idea of a mercury in retrograde may seem scary, don’t let it shake you up too much. Ultimately, with patience, and flexibility you will survive. It’s just important to be mindful of these things so you can thrive despite the retrograde.
