In my Writing for Fashion class, the subject of Vogue’s content was discussed. While many did not make their opinion known, I said the unthinkable and stated that I was not a fan. Now don’t get me wrong, Vogue is one of the main reasons I decided to attend fashion school. I was OBSESSED as an adolescent. However, lately I started thinking to myself, “What really sparked my interest about the magazine as a thirteen year old?” Was it the glossy pages, or maybe it was because it was such an iconic publication? After rummaging through 20+ years of Vogue archives at the library, it finally clicked: it was all about the fashion editorials.
Vogue is the crème de la crème when it comes to editorial spreads, and it’s all thanks to one individual: Grace Coddington. Those who are not too familiar with Vogue are perhaps scratching their heads in confusion, “I thought Anna Wintour created all of that”. Yes, Anna is the driving force behind Vogue, but what most people did not know until the documentary The September Issue hit the silver screen is that the fiery redhead also known as the Creative Director of Vogue is the brains behind this section of the magazine.
Today, we learned that Grace would be stepping down from the sought-after position. Tweets, Instagrams, and Facebook posts everywhere filled with sorrow:
Some were even hoping she would take on a higher position:
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from the fashion industry (and my addiction to Project Runway) we should “Expect the Unexpected”. I’m sure we’ll see more from Grace Coddington in the future.
As for now, the biggest question on my mind is, “WHO IS REPLACING GRACE?” Any ideas? Sound off in the comments below.
