Top 10 Curly Hair Products

If you have curly hair, chances are you have reached a point where you are so over your hair.  Let’s face it our hair has a mind of its own.  It can be difficult to maintain, frizzy, unruly and unmanageable, but if you are using the right products, you will never find yourself wanting to reach for the straightener again.  From one curly haired girl to another, here is a list of some of the best products to keep you and your hair happy.

1. L.A. LOOKS Gel

I have been using this product since middle school, and I still consider it to be my all-time favorite gel.  That is saying a lot since, trust me, I have tried an insane number of gels.  There are no downsides to L.A. LOOKS.  It is highly affordable, alcohol free, and makes your hair look amazing. Big tip with this product: a little bit goes a long way.  As with most gels, if you put too much in, you will get that crunchy texture, and your hair will start feeling gross sooner.

2. DevaCurl No Poo

DevaCurl No Poo is a really great conditioning cleanser.  Not only is it sulfate free, paraben free and silicone free, like the entire DevaCurl range, but it is incredibly moisturizing and cleanses so well.  It can take a little while to get past the idea that if there are no suds, your hair is not getting clean, but after you get used to it and see how clean your hair gets, you will never go back.

3. DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel

The DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel is the only gel I have used that rivals L.A. LOOKS gel.  It smells incredible, works well to combat frizz and keep your curls defined. You will never get that crunchy feel when you use this gel, no matter how much you scrunch in.  As with all DevaCurl products, it is a little more on the expensive side, but it is a great splurge.

4. DevaCurl OneCondition

Your curly hair will love OneCondition.  Seriously, you will never have a bad hair day after using it.  It hydrates like no other and keeps away frizz all day.  It also smells amazing.  If you want to skip out on spending money on a separate deep conditioner, you can put this in your hair after cleansing it and leave it in for several hours.  It is a bit pricey, so it might not be in a college student’s budget all the time, but if you are looking for a splurge this is a great option.

5. DevaCurl Low Poo

Low Poo is different from the No Poo cleanser because it creates suds like a normal shampoo but it is also free from sulfates, parabens and silicones.  Alternate between No Poo and Low Poo, using Low Poo after using coconut oil, as it tends to wash out the oil better or when your hair is feeling extra dirty; then, use No Poo the rest of the time for a great cleansing duo.

6. Microfiber Towel or Cotton Tee

Terrycloth towels can cause a lot of frizz and damage to your hair because the texture of the material is not gentle.  Microfiber towels or 100% cotton tees are much better options for drying your curls because they minimize frizz and are not harsh.  This is such an easy tip because everyone has a cotton t-shirt lying around.

7. Scrunchies

Scrunchies are a great option for all hair types because they do not pull at your scalp or leave hair tie marks in your hair.  Throw your hair up into a loose bun and secure it with a scrunchie before you sleep, and when you wake up in the morning your curls will be good to go.

8. TRESemme Botanique Nourish and Replenish Conditioner

This conditioner is one of the best drug store conditioners out there for curly hair.  Just like DevaCurl products, it is free from silicones, parabens and sulfates, which are bad for your curls, and moisturizes hair so well, and it is only about $5!  You can also use this one as a deep conditioner just like the OnceCondition.

9. Coconut Oil

If your hair is feeling damaged or dry, or you just want to deep condition, coconut oil is an amazing choice because it has so many vitamins.  It does wonders for your scalp and your hair.  Put it in damp hair, wrap your hair into a towel (microfiber of course) or t-shirt, put a shower cap over the towel to trap in the heat, and leave it on for several hours or even overnight.  Your hair will feel so moisturized in the morning.  You might have to cleanse your hair a couple extra times in the shower to wash it all out.

10. Biotin

Biotin is a vitamin that is said to help with hair growth and generally be good for your hair.  Taking biotin supplements every day can help your hair look better and feel strong.  As an added bonus, they can keep your nails strong and looking super healthy.

All of these products contribute to keeping your curls hydrated and genuinely strong and healthy.  Curly hair is so unique and beautiful, just like you, and embracing your hair can be one of the best things you will ever do!
