SCAD Kinetic 2016 is a Motion Media Success

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD ATL chapter.

SCAD Kinetic 2016 took place at the Digital Media Center at SCAD Atlanta last Thursday. It was an hour-long event packed with short clips and films created by talented motion media majors. The videos showcased music, animated graphics, graphics with a story line and branded graphics.

Kinetic screened work of both graduate and undergraduate motion media majors. The videos took animated characters to the next level and there was constantly something moving right before your eyes whether it was random lips or a Starbucks cup.

A majority of the work fell into a “branded” category where the videos felt like commercials you’d see at home. There were some great short ads for Starbucks, Skype, VH1, MTV, FXX and even old films such as Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums.” If the films weren’t “branded” related, they featured incredible story lines about overcoming adversity or breaking the conventions of family. All of the five minute long films captivated the audience and there was not an empty seat in the house.

A few weeks ago a similar style event to Kinetic called Atlantamation happened, but it showcased animation films rather than motion media films. After attending both events I now understand the difference between the two majors. Kinetic had more of an emphasis on “motion,” story line and catering to brands. But without animation, these motion media films would not be possible as animation acts as the building blocks in all of the student films.

When the credits rolled after each film it was great to see the collaboration and all the students it took to make these short films. While five minutes doesn’t seem like a long time, it definitely is for the sleep-deprived designer.

Lupita Djody an M.F.A. motion media student at SCAD Atlanta participated in Kinetic and was kind enough to share her work that was shown at the event. Her two pieces of work are great examples of fun moving graphics along with a concept about phobias. One is titled “HAPPY” and the other is “PHOB!A.”

Congratulations to all the students that participated in both Kinetic and Atlantamation; your hard work is evident and appreciated by fans like myself.
