It took me about four days to finish the show. I was hooked at the end of the first episode.

TikTok also helped.

If you don’t know yet, “Wednesday” is centered around Wednesday Addams from the Addams Family. She’s sent away to a school for outcasts called Nevermore. At Nevermore as she puts it, Wednesday is “hunted, haunted and the target of an attempted murder.”

What I liked

The show is fresh. It doesn’t feel like something I’ve seen before. I’ve always wondered what kind of person Wednesday would turn into when she got older. Now, I know. Wednesday is certainly unique. She has a thirst for all things dark and gruesome. She is unapologetically herself in every episode.

But, she’s not opposed to learning. Despite what it may seem like Wednesday is capable of making friends. She makes quite a few by the end of the season. Wednesday believes in herself. She believes in her ability to uncover the truth. Even when everyone around her is doubting her.

Thing was the perfect hand. I was rooting for them. I don’t know what Thing’s pronouns are, so I’ll say they/them. Thing was funny and the cutest part was when they had a cute little birthday hat on. Thing is helpful, clever and a good lock picker.

Back to Wednesday.

I do have to say that Wednesday really has the stare and the non-blinking down pat. Like it’s perfect. She only blinks when she is really caught off guard or getting emotional on the inside.

Enid and Wednesday’s friendship. Light and dark don’t even begin to describe the friendship between the two. Enid is pink, bubbly and a bit of a scaredy cat. Wednesday is dark, unhappy and fearless. Their friendship development from the first episode to the last is heartwarming. It’s wonderful to see.

What I didn’t like

I don’t know why but for some reason Wednesday has a weird hate relationship with her mother, Morticia. Could it be because it’s just the teenage years? Maybe. But she constantly insists that she doesn’t want to be anything like her and always makes snide remarks about her mother. From what I know, Morticia hasn’t done anything to Wednesday for her to act like this.

Another thing I didn’t like is something Morticia said. In one episode to a black man she says, “Men like you have no idea what it feels like to not be believed.”

Let’s be serious right now Morticia! And the writers of the show. Why would you say something like that? Of course, in context, it might make sense but really…come on. With everything that happens in the world to black men??

Diversity and representation are super slim, as it always is. I can literally count on my hands how many people of color INCLUDING black people there are on the show. It’s 2022. I understand that Nevermore is a school for outcasts but why are the majority of them all pale white students?

They were also trying REALLY hard to make the romance thing work. Why? The show would have been just as successful if there wasn’t any romance in it. There was no need for the love triangle. It felt really forced and awkward.

In all, Wednesday is a 10/10 show. I need season two right now. If you haven’t already seen it put it on the list for one of your weekend plans.
