We’ve heard the cliché, “It all moves so fast!”

As I approach adulthood, I am starting to believe this more and more each day. My most current example of how quickly time moves is evident within my first semester of college, which I just completed. I still cannot believe I have already been in college for over three months. I often forget that I am now an adult, away from my family and friends from home.

I feel that I have learned more about myself in my first semester of college than I have in my entire lifetime. Although it has gone by rather quickly, and I feel bittersweet about that, I remember all of the joy this season of my life brought me. Nearly every aspect of my life was transformed when I began college. A new place, with new people, with new academics. It seemed absurd that somehow I could integrate into this new lifestyle so quickly and seamlessly, but somehow, I did.

Before I knew it, I was actively involved in classes and clubs that allowed me to discover new passions and meet amazing people along the way. The semester system in college is quite different from high school, which I am definitely still adapting to. It seems that as soon as you get comfortable with your professors and subjects of study, a new semester and schedule begin. Though the semester system intimidated me at first, I find it to be optimal for academia. You are exposed to more material than you would be in high school. Further, it forces individuals to seek connections with their professors and classmates sooner than later knowing they only have limited time with them. Being on a semester system helps college students learn to be comfortable with change instead of hiding from it, as I once did. The real world moves at a rapid pace, and we must be comfortable with our abilities to not only survive in uncertainty and change — but thrive.

Soon, it will be a completely new year. I have always enjoyed New Year’s because I am self-admittedly corny and appreciate looking back at all of the special moments in a given year. So, within the next three weeks, I am ending an academic semester and a calendar year at the same time. This certainly can seem overwhelming, creating waves of relentless emotions and nostalgia. It is hard to leave behind the memories of what once was. Despite this, I am choosing to view this period as a chance for growth and gratitude. Even though so much is changing in my life, I find it helpful to think of all the constants in my life- friends, family and hobbies.

I am looking forward to next year, as well as my next academic semester. I will continue to practice enjoying the moment and being present with my friends and family. I view college as a pivotal moment for many since it is hard to imagine another time in which we will be this young and free. No matter what is happening in your life, make a commitment to yourself to slow down and acknowledge everything that you value in this life.
