Who else dreads Halloween?

I know not liking Halloween seems like the worst thing to admit. No one wants to deal with the questions like, “How could you?” or “Why? It’s literally the best day ever.” But those who question just must not get it. I am constantly hoping for the Halloween costume party that they have in the movies, but I have still never been to one.

There is so much that goes into planning and shopping for the perfect night. Or not even the perfect night, but the basics like choosing a costume, and how to have fun.

For starters, pick a costume. I always find myself wanting to have a costume that is something that relates to me, is fun, and is cute. You would think this is easy to do but I find myself running out of ideas that are in my budget, which for one night, I really do not want to spend more than $25 altogether. Now, if there is a costume that needs an accessory or piece of clothing that could be worn for other occasions, I would splurge. For example, this year, I am being a flapper girl alongside all of my roommates. I bit the bullet and bought the two-piece fringe skirt and crop top set because I could so see myself wearing that some other time in my life. I could wear that set to a country concert, or out dancing. But say a playboy bunny costume, as much as I would love to wear that outfit again, I doubt I ever would.

Plus, if you live in New York like me, I can guarantee that you’re not wanting to wear a leotard outside. There is always a slight chance of snow on October 31.

This is not to say that you can’t find cheap or affordable ways around costumes, I for sure have. But, sometimes it does not always feel like the real deal if you didn’t buy the expensive, but worth it, costume. Or if you have to change your plans because of your budget, that’s just no fun.

But the epitome of it all, I feel that Halloween is so overhyped that the actual fun of the night is getting dressed up and taking pictures. No matter what costume idea you went with. This feeling I have is ironic because of the stress I feel attempting to pull off a costume, but is putting it all together the actual excitement of Halloween?

If you feel this way, let it be. A lot of times this is true for other areas of our lives. The build-up to the actual event is more fun than the event.

I have the spooky suspicion that if I stopped overthinking this night of fun, I could enjoy the build-up and the actual night a lot more.

Overall, this just may be my pessimistic view of the hallmark holiday. But it stresses me out! I love to dress up and have fun but sometimes it seems like more work than it’s worth. I will uncontestedly admit, this is a sad way to think about a day that is meant to be thrilling fun.

So, if you feel anything like I do, I offer some tips:

  • Do a group costume! The relief of your friend’s ideas and plans will help you feel more put together
  • Listen to Monster Mash (it always puts me in the mood)
  • You tried your best, and that’s what matters
  • Just because you did not spend the most money, does not mean that you can’t 100% pull off your costume
  • Fake it till you make it, (become your costume) I am sure you will feel much more in character
  • Remind yourself that life is short and you look great

I hope that these affrimations help, if you feel like I do, to enjoy your spooky day in whatever spooky way you choose to go.

Howdy babes, my name is Hadley Thompson and I am super happy to be here. I am from Niagara Falls, NY, and am ready to move where the Buffalo winters aren't so strong, brrrrr. I am a senior political science and journalism double major at St. Bonaventure University. I still remember my first semester writing for HC, I was the only new inductee at our annual interest meeting! It is so awesome to have witnessed this group of insightful and wonderful minds grow throughout the years. As I finish up my time here at Bonas, I hope to combine all of my hobbies and interests as I step into this next chapter of my life. Because I love things like reading, studying politics, environmental studies, chatting it up, writing, and such, I am applying to law school, eek! I will have to keep you updated. I am super excited for this semester amidst all of the changes, senior feelings, and, of course, to be a part of HC @ SBU! :)
