Sunscreen is a product that no one is excited to buy or excited to wear. Most of all, it is usually the most annoying to apply.

I vividly remember not wanting to wear sunscreen when I was younger because of the white and chalky residue it left everywhere you put it, the restrictions of not being able to jump in the pool right away because it needed to dry, or because of the way that I just wanted to be a tan-beach girl and SPF 100 diminished that dream.

I feel as though it is not only me who has felt this way about sunscreen before. Sure, it helps you not burn, but sometimes the weight of this weird product off your skin is worth the burn. Or so, I thought until I started having the very real scare of skin damage and skin cancer.

It is crazy to think that a while ago, the normal level of SPF in a sunscreen container would be seven, at the highest. I have now seen bottles with SPF 400 labeled on them.

Though it is annoying, I understand this precaution in something as simple as sunscreen. The Mahoney Dermatology Center states that, “Statistics show that by age of 70, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer.” As I get older, being around for as many years of my life that I possibly can matter more than looking somewhat sunkissed. This statistic scares me.

There has been a new trend on the rise to combat this fear of skin cancer. Personally, it is one of my favorite things when hobbies, exercises and overall practices of self-care become a trend. This new savvy and daily sunscreen trend is an excellent exercise for practicing self-care.

Makeup and skin care companies across the beauty section have been offering new and improved variations of sunscreen that you can apply right under your makeup. They have the same effect of keeping your skin safe while adding a new aspect to your everyday look. Some have tints of highlight, others are self tanning and there are even some in oil forms. With a formula for everyone’s preferences, there is no way that putting on sunscreen has to be such an annoying hassle anymore.

I have found my personal favorite to be the brand Biossance. It has an SPF of 45 and acts as a primer while adding some glitter to everywhere I apply it. Instead of looking even paler in the sun, I glow.

In fact, adding one more product to your routine that gives you a little extra reassurance that you are taking care of yourself really makes a difference.

I hope that this trend motivates you to help preserve not only your skin, but your passion for self-care.

Howdy babes, my name is Hadley Thompson and I am super happy to be here. I am from Niagara Falls, NY, and am ready to move where the Buffalo winters aren't so strong, brrrrr. I am a senior political science and journalism double major at St. Bonaventure University. I still remember my first semester writing for HC, I was the only new inductee at our annual interest meeting! It is so awesome to have witnessed this group of insightful and wonderful minds grow throughout the years. As I finish up my time here at Bonas, I hope to combine all of my hobbies and interests as I step into this next chapter of my life. Because I love things like reading, studying politics, environmental studies, chatting it up, writing, and such, I am applying to law school, eek! I will have to keep you updated. I am super excited for this semester amidst all of the changes, senior feelings, and, of course, to be a part of HC @ SBU! :)
