The Struggle Of “Spring” For Western New Yorkers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SBU chapter.

One day you’re in shorts lying in the grass soaking up the sun, the next day you’re grabbing your winter jacket and gloves to embrace the freezing cold tundra.

If you think the nice weather is finally here to stay, you should know better after all of the springs in WNY that you have lived through. Two weeks ago, it was almost 70 degrees outside. Last week, it was alternating between snow and hail. This week, there has been a mix of flurries and sunshine. There’s no such thing as a perfect spring in WNY because the weather can never make up its mind.

We would like to think that once it gets close to April, we can kiss the snow goodbye for good, but you can never be too sure. The snow creeps up on us when we’re least expecting it. Personally, spring has slowly become my least favorite season. The weather is unpredictable and usually results in gross mud all over the place. I hate to say it, but I would rather see crisp, white snow than a mess of mud. It also feels like the longest season because it’s basically an extensive waiting game where everyone is anxiously anticipating the warm, summer weather.

Realistically, we shouldn’t really complain about this winter because it has been super mild in comparison to what we dealt with during last winter and other winters in the past. But, when it gets to be this time of year when you don’t know whether or not you should keep out your winter boots or bring out your spring dresses, the inconsistency can be really frustrating. All of the stores are displaying their new spring collections, but these clothes are useless to Western New Yorkers. We find ourselves raiding the clearance rack for the remnants of winter clothing that have been left behind.

Western New York is famous for getting all four seasons in full-force every year, and spring is no exception. Despite the irritation that occurs because of the crazy weather we get here, I do love living in a place where I get to experience the dramatic change in season every year. Spring is the toughest season to predict, but I would rather have the variety of weather that WNY gives us than live in the same type of weather every single day.
