“Why can’t I try on different lives, like dresses, to see which fits best and is more becoming?” – Sylvia Plath

I know wanting a multifaceted life is not an unusual dream. Millions of college girls at this very moment are grappling with what they want their career to be and how to get there. But what if I want 10 different jobs? I know realistically I cannot really ‘have it all’, but if I could live multiple lives, here are some things I would do for work:

PR and Event Communications for a Nonprofit

  • I’m 90% sure this will be my actual career. I am passionate about advocacy, I love my major and minors and am being trained for a solid career communicating. This is one of my more realistic dreams. In a perfect world this happens while I live in a dreamy apartment in DC.

Funeral Home Director:

  • Okay, I get this one sounds weird. However, I have always been very fascinated with death and the grief process. This is not in a pessimistic way, but I think having a good funeral home director and space can create such a different funeral/wake experience. Nothing can take away the pain of losing a loved one, but a bad funeral home can probably add to it. I would love to be able to help families through their grief and honor their loved ones in unique ways. I also consider myself very good at logistical tasks such as planning and scheduling so this was a way I can use these skills for the benefit of others.

Child Life Specialist:

  • Besides my Biology 101 tutoring, I have 0 science or medical skills. I don’t even think my CPR certification is up to date. Despite this, I saw a Tik Tok about three months ago about a job called a child life specialist. Essentially what this role does is help children in the hospital through things like their fears from IV’s, sensory medical play, education for parents and siblings on new diagnosis, and any other needs a family has during their treatment. It’s extremely patient centered. While I have no interest in science or medical knowledge, I think this is a fascinating career and emphasis the importance of play even in the hospital environment.

Music Journalist:

  • I have always been a music lover. Not only am I a lifelong fan of the radio, but I have also been in many school bands and choirs. I know a good amount of music. Because of my dad, I also know a lot about the larger music industry. We love watching music documentaries and learning all about the touring and songwriting process. A dream job would be interviewing songwriters about these tours, musical/songwriting processes, or things like the difference in local economy when Taylor Swift is nearby. My dear friend Brooke is on this career path right now at GW and I could not be prouder of her. I wish I was you!

Influencer:

  • I think we have all had moments of wishing we could post our debt away by going viral on TikTok. I love to make sweet videos on my (private) account like days in my life or following other current trends. I know influencers have real life challenges too, but I have a feeling my life would be considerably easier if instead of sitting in my journalism class, I could be filming a ‘get ready with me’.

Stay at home mother:

  • I don’t think this could be my entire adult life, but I do think right after I have kids this role could be a possibility. I have always wanted kids, and in a perfect world I would have three. Thinking about spending my days reading to them, watching Sesame Street together, playing and doing household maintenance does hold some appeal. In no way would this be easy, and would probably be the most difficult of all the jobs listed above, but it does give a sense of peace.
